What do you guys think of this radio?

Seems a bit odd not having a traditional mic, and relying on BT or head unit itself. Other than that it seems like it might have some great features.

What are your thoughts on this unit for expedition use?

I have following this radio since it came out and I get frustrated everytime I think about it...
Yaesu just released a price on the bluetooth adapter but still not aval and no info about if it will work with any bluetooth headset or only thiers....not cool to come to market with something where one of its major features is a no go....
otherwise small form factor weatherproof and lots of features but still don't think I will consider it until everything is aval and has been in use for a while.

I am still going for the 7800 I think since I will get dualband, backlit buttons, good power and range and I can program with the laptop.

I am betting the Yaesu FTM-10R will be a short lived model, Once of the nice and sometimes bad things about Yaesu is they take chances at come out with some odd ball stuff, things that make perfect sense in japan and they bring it to the US, this is one of them. There is actually 2 version of this radio, the FTM-10R but if you get the waterproof version FTM-10SR your power output drops to 10w instead of 40watts. Also Just how many motorcycle hams are there. There are lots of scooter riders in japan but a very small market in the US. It does offer a nice test bed for bluetooth and lots of the features will move into other models, but the radio design as whole is so so and will most likley only last a year or so.

It doesn't even come with a mike! The mike is built into the unit and uses a PTT button...

I still say it is useless without the bluetooth which it seems they are in no hurry at all to ever make aval...
I would have already bought it if the bluetooth setup was functional..
it is like buying a car with in dash navigation only to find that there are no maps...but they hope to have them "soon"

YOU use the remote head with the mic in it. You can add a mic or use the bluetooth when/if it comes out.

5 years from now some pre-teen will be saying to his Dad "You mean the radios you started with had microphones on cords? How could that have ever worked? Weren't you limited by the length of the cord?"

I am actually looking into this model after seeing one at Texas Towers. It fixes one concern of the 7800, mainly the mic on the face plate. The 10R could be mounted under the seat with a mic mounted on the main body and the remote face with the second speaker mounted in front of the shifter. It also has a little more recieve capacity but does have some useless items like commercial AM and FM recieve. It would be nicer if they got ride of the AM and FM and replaced it with NOAA weather alerts and changed the blue erad out to a more Toyota matching orange. That would seal the deal for me.

I installed this transceiver, in my 2000 Tacoma, back in December 2007 and I have been very happy with it.

I am getting good reports on my transmission quality and I am happy with the receive quality of this radio.

I installed one of these in my '07 Wrangler and really like it. I installed the MEK-M10 mic jack also purchased the MH-68A6J DTMF mic, but haven't used them yet. With the face plate mounted over head, I can key up the mic and talk normally and everyone says it sounds normal. No need to for me to remove the face plate and move it closer to my face. I went to HRO yesterday to look at the bluetooth unit and was disappointed how large it really is. I thought it'd be much smaller. I'll be getting a second one and putting it in my other Jeep as well.

I love the internet, I was just about to post a thread asking for opinions on these, and there allready was one. Now I just have to order it, and find time to take my test so I can use it.

Just placed one on order. As a Jeep owner, I liked the water/dustproof aspect. I figure it is also a good starter radio since it is really a single-band. The "dual-band" in the ads for this one is really AM/FM and 2M. Once I'm feeling comfotable and I "outgrow" this radio. I will move this one to a Yamaha Rhino or Polaris RZR and get a higher quality Kenwood. This Yaesu will be great in a side-by-side bacause of the radio and iPod interface functionality.

IN the Jeep, I'll mount the base unit in the Tuffy O/H console and the remote faceplate somewher on the dash.

Now that the Bluetooth headset is available for this it might be even better. Model is Yaesu BH-1. You will also need a charging sleeve and a Bluetooth adapter that connects to the motherboard either in the main body or the remote faceplate. Ooooo...and the Headset is waterproof too!

Now...gotta take the Tech test
