Wow what a great trip! Thanks for sharing. Diablo lake I'll need to look that up. I did a very quick trip for a family service we took 97 from Weed all the way through to Biggs then EAST to Pasco. Some of the locations you mention sound familiar to me. My father inlaw was doing the same drive except he got creative! Keep in mind his ride is a 2005 SLK 350 with 14,000 miles on it. He decided he wanted to see 395 and was starting in the Bay Area! Lets just say he's very lucky that Mercedes put a 18.5 Gallon tank in that car and it can do 32mpg if you really really try hard to get good mileage!! HA HA He confirmed that when needed he can do 50+ miles on the fuel light. HA

calicamper:
395 is a great highway, especially through the eastern Sierras. It is much quieter north of Susanville, even more so north of Alturas. I would like to do an eBook on the sights along 395 that another photographer did with 89.

Diablo Lake photo is from the overlook but you can drive down there across the dam. I believe there is a boat that takes you across the lake to some cabins but not 100% sure. The North Cascades are really close to our home and the scenic drive is spectacular. Lots of trails into wilderness plus a few USFS roads to explore. Highway 20 all the way through usually opens in May and closes in November. The eastern and western ends remain open. It was built in the early 1970s.

97 is a truck route from Weed but travels through some nice scenery.

Our diesel truck with camper gets around 11 + or - with a 38 gallon tank. We go on lots of gravel washboarded roads, some quite rocky, others graded. We try to avoid freeways, preferring county roads then state highways. You see more that way and they usually are the lead ins to more adventure.

Your fil sounds like a great road tripper.

That recent trip was in September. Highway 97 had more deer than I've ever seen!!!! When every truck you see has a Bush bumper on it, its a good idea to slow up and keep your peepers open for deer or herds of them crossing the road. Talking probably 200 in large groups between Weed and the Columbia.

Thanks, Tony. We have several of your books on back road travel that ride shotgun with us as we explore the west. Lots of great places to check out.
