Second Spair Tire

Sorry I just found it Dan, it was in the Fall 2012 Overland Journal. It was a picture caption on page 114 in the tire repair kit skills section interestingly enough. The quote was" While on a trek to Angel Falls, Venezuela, with ARB, Editor Chris Collard and team experienced 7 tire failures in the first 24 hours in the jungle. It is better to practice your tire repair skills "before you are in the field".

He also stated during the comparison article that after several recent flats he has learned to carry two spares along with a full tire repair kit.

That is all I have. Hope it helps.

Do you have the specifics on where they were?

I drove through Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Chile and Argentina, and probably had ~10 flats for the entire 12ish months and ~20,000 miles.
Every one of them was a nail or some kind of metal chunk actually stuck in the tread.
None of them required me to actually put the spare on the jeep.

Right on, thanks.
I chose not to go to Venezuela, partly because at the time of year I was there, Angel falls would have been a mere trickle.

I heard the road in there is quite something :)

Agree with all the above,, we drug second spares across country with us twice. I figured six tires on the ground warranted two spares.. WRONG,,,, I'll never waste the space or weight again,, if things get really bad we can always cannibalize one of the trailer tires, go get a new tire, and come back for the trailer, but two flats in one outing is not enough of a probability to drag around that extra 60 lbs. Over the years we have been able to shed over 300 lbs of excess weight by upgrading to much lighter gear and equipment and by taking what we need, and needing what we take.
