Overlanding Tires

About time for some new tires for my 2 Door Jeep Wrangler Rubicon. I have AEV Beadlock Wheels. I've been running BFG AT 285/70/17s but wanting to run a 33" tire. I've looked at the Mickey Thompson MTZ tires but not sure a Mud Terrain is the best choice. Lots of choices out there but looking for input from others. Many thanks for your replies.....

im a big fan of the Toyo Opencountry MT. while being aggressive, it has excellent road manners, is very durable and has incredible tread life - however its aggression and durability comes at minor cost of fuel economy.

ive done the all terrain thing. you can go a lot of places with an all terrain, but they're no match for a well designed mud terrain or maximum traction tire.

another excellent choice is the General Grabber red label

BFG KM2's are amazing. Last a long time, don't chunk out, tenacious grip, stay true, balanced, and round better than any other large tire I've tried. Durable 3 ply sidewall, holds a bead extremely well, even when aired down to stupidly low pressures. Perform well on wet pavement, and pretty quiet despite the agressive lug. Wide range of sizes, and readily available in most locations where you are likely to destroy a tire. Plus, they look custom made for Jeeps :)

PS: I used MTZ's for a little while. Adequate tire, but stiffer than I liked for the terrain I ran.

I've had Mickey thompsons before, I wasn't a huge fan of the stiffness, or the performance to price ratio. I've got falken tire's high country all terrains right now and they are fantastic all condition tires, they aren't the easiest to find any more but the newer falken high peak is supposed to be a great option if just a bit less aggressive, but comparable to the duratracs

I think the terrain you are travelling is the biggest factor.

I come from a rock crawling background where aggressive tires are required. I've tried numerous different radial MT design tires. With my mad driving skills:smiley_drive:, I can take out the side wall on a radial MT in 10 feet!

Interco TSL/SX's are the only tires that have met my needs in the rocks. Awesome tire, damn near flat proof, can be aired down below 5 psi with few issues. Would I run them on my LJ for overland type use? No! Well... I'm hard headed... I have put them on for a few cross country trips.

For my use, Death Valley, Baja, SoCal deserts, BFG AT's are the best all around compromise for my use. In overland style travel I've never encountered any terrain where the AT style tire was my limiting factor. Having said that, I rarely see any mud. On the rare occasion that I do encounter mud, desert mud is like peanut butter. There isn't a mud tire out there, including Bogger's that it won't clog\ the tread on.

Look at the tires that others in your area are using with success and go that direction.

I've read great things about the Cooper AT3 in both Overland Journal & 4WD & Sport Utility mags. I'm a big fan of my General Grabber AT2's, however, some complain of week sidewalls. I'm not a rockhound, just a trail rider on the east coast. Most of my "mud" is just sandy-water filled holes. I may try Dura Tracs as my next tire.

Another vote for you to consider the Cooper AT3. Put them on my vehicle around Labor Day and have been really happy with them in the ~6k miles I've had them. Good traction, quiet ride, 65k tread life warranty, and even upping the size it appears I've only lost about 1mpg.

An other vote for the BFG KM2. Best "all terrain" mud tire I ever drove. Excellent on wet pavement too.

I'll put a vote in for the Duratraks. Great on road wet weather traction and they are great in the snow also. A very good compromise between full mud terrain and an all terrain tire I think.

Problem with the AEV Beadlock wheels is tires like the Coopers have sidewalls that don't allow the beadlock ring to fit correctly. I really like the Toyo MT tires but they don't come in 33s. 295/70/17 is as close as they get. The KM2 are leading the pack for me at the moment. I can get them in 305/70/17.

Same here. Excellent all around tire, and actually the first time that I've run more than once. I sold my last truck with over 45k miles on the km2s with half tread, running a Detroit rear locker. I had this set siped and they are amazing in snow and ice. I went on a snow run at a local ohv park and where others were slipping and spinning I just eased along.

Duratraks would be by first choice but they don't come in the size I'm looking for.
