Good deal, glad you got it out. Hope you have a better-than-horrible-freight engine hoist! :)

Disassembled the top end of the motor to find a failed head gasket and or cracked cylinder. #6 looked really bad but bottomed is completely seized...

Pics to come.

I hope the head is salvageable.

Remember I got a 3FE head sitting here with your name on it. Say the word and I will take it by the machine shop to have it looked at.

Cheers

The water pump is completely seized and gunked up...

Can't see any damage to the head.... will bring it to the machine shop to be cleaned and tested...

Pistons were certainly stuck. Look at the white in C1 and the rust in all cylinders but C3. C3 looked perfectly healthy. C1 looked very bad....

I was very frustrated last night.... spent a couple hours trying to troubleshoot the manual transmission. I'm not sure why, but one of the shift forks was out of place and was not allowing the shift lever to move properly.... once i figured that out It now shifts through the gears.... I thought I was going to need to go get my tool box back (forcefully) that I traded for the transmission!

The fork at bottom of the pic needed to be pulled down and the corresponding shuttle gear (correct term?) at the bottom of the pic below needed to be moved down. Reassembled the cover and stuck the shift lever in and voila, it worked properly!

The gears look to be in good shape. H trannies are known for being nearly indestructible though.

Yeah, I was glad to see they looked good.

Lee, can you keep your eyes open for some 85+ FJ60 driveshafts in our area? Otherwise I might just have to borrow Ross's!:sombrero:

Will do. Georg (Valley Hybrids in CA) has a good supply and he comes to Texas usually once per year.

It would be hard to liberate Ross's since he's driven his back to Idaho!

So, I intend to desmog the truck and fabricating a bracket to run a second alternator in place of the air pump.

Why?

Well, I do intend to run a dual battery set up. I'll be running coms, fridge, power inverter, aux lights, and winch to the second battery.

I guess its relevant at this point to toss the idea of running an electric fan. Decrease some drag on the already anemic 3FE and have the option of selectable operation (thermostat, on, off).
Now, I'm wondering what fan to go with. Granted I still have a little time before this occurs...

Very discouraging news, the other cylinder head (the original to the truck) that I brought in to the machine shop is also cracked.... but it pressure tested fine. The machinist (who builds top of the line race car and airplane engines) said it should be fine... but that he'd replace it or find a good one if it were his money.

I kind of made a mental reservation that if this one didn't check out good that I would find an alternative engine to install...... to the tune of a conversion. Unfortunately, I don't want to commit my funds to that project at this time... but also dont want to waste any more time or money on bad engines/heads....

What to do... what to do?
