Cruiser Therapy: LaOutbackTrail's FJ62 Landcruiser

Lengthwise they're almost the same. Width wise, the cruiser is a couple of inches wider... if I recall correctly. I'll try to remember to measure this evening.

Thanks, and I assume the 62 has slightly less height so overall volume in the monty would be a bit more? The 60 does have better lines though :costumed-smiley-007

Thinking my true 4x4 explorer is going to be an ongoing project so I'm taking my time identifying the proper platform while in the meantime I use my awd based stuff. Haven't gotten out to drive any 60/62s yet, been somewhat distracted on 1st gen 4runners recently! Like those a lot but realistically btw me and my gf we have 3 dogs. Trips get packed pretty heavy with just water alone, the 4runner may be a bit small. Sorry to hear the Monty got somewhat drowned, hopefully that doesn't put too much a damper on this 62 project.

I forgot to measure, sorry. I'm going to suck when I become an old man, my memory is already horrible.

Monty is revived, just need to flush the ATF again. Thinking about picking up another 3FE for the cruiser this weekend, if the compression checks out.

Compression tested out within good spec of 149. All cylinders were right on spec, one was about 140. Good enough. I'm going to flush the cooling system and replace the water pump, rear main seal, clean the oil pan, swap throttle bodies/intake plenum, put in the fuel injectors I rebuilt, and run with it.

Hoping to drive this truck within a month!

Got engine #3 stripped down almost as far as I'm going to go. Couple things left, but its 1:30AM....

You're up late, and I'm up early. Progress; I guess you know this head is good?

Compression test checked out at near spec for all cylinders (some spot on). I'm currently at the juncture in which I can easily replace the head gasket. I have one on the shelf. But I don't want to take another head to the machine shop... I've already spent over $180 to have the machine shop tell me two heads were bad and irreparable. I don't feel like going through that pain and anguish again!!

So, I reckon I'll be replacing the head gasket tonight and then reassembling the engine to stick back into the truck. Oh, then packing the Montero up for departure Friday evening for a local family camping trip... a friend recently said to me "kid, you've got lots of energy it seems." To which my response was this youtube video.

Have a good one gentlemen.

Had some fun this evening:

FYI, this style wheel does not clear the calipers. I'll pick up some little spacers, wont take much.

Finally got the head off of engine #3. Looks good. Head gasket was nearly perfect, the cylinders look great. Valves look good. But the head itself is really greasy.... debating on bringing it to the machine shop at Napa and letting them run it through the parts washer....

Here are some pics for yall...

The block. Cylinders look good. Nevermind the discoloration on the first cylinder...

I'm gonna ultrasonic bath these guys... then brush them up nicely.

Then I'm going to finish cleaning the head and replace the valve stem seals, stick in a new head gasket and start putting it all back together.

Anyone have any ideas how to break the crank loose with the engine on the engine stand and head off?

Scott, I happen to have a 3FE crank immobilizer tool that I made when I had an FJ80. It is a bar of 3/16" steel that bolts to the front of the crank (with three of the pulley bolts) and is 31" long (long enough to hit the ground with the engine still in the truck). If you lower your engine stand close to the ground or put the crank close to a wall it should work. Then spin the big nut off with an impact gun. Pretty sure I still have the socket for that too if you need it.
