Double R Trailer Rebuild

I maybe headed to Phoenix around the time you are headed North. Maybe you could extend a day or two. Headed to Sedona, then down to Mesa for Senior games cycling. Let me know.

Also, not much into the ice detail you are showing!!!!!!!. Hope it is warmer on the border.

Got to be back in Cedaredge by the 21st. Yes it was very warm later in the week. See my trip report.

After using my RTT for eight nights I'm thinking I might be better served by a Autohome Columbus. Much faster to set up and more room for bedding. Just leaving one fat sleeping bag in my RTT makes it nearly impossible to close. And forget about pillows or any other gear. The Columbus should handle all I'd ever need or want to leave up there. Also more aerodynamic but will overhang the ends of the trailer a few inches. Adding a rear bumper should take care of that. Called Autohome and my size not in stock. If I order now it will be delivered sometime in May. At that time I will be selling my Hannibal RTT.

The Devil's Highway and all that washboard caused one shock to blow its guts out. They were used anyway so no surprise. Now the problem will be selecting the right replacement shocks. Can't just go by length as most truck or even car shocks would be too stiff for a lightweight trailer. Any ideas on where to look for an appropriately valved set of shocks?

A note on trailer tire pressure. I'm running 315-75R-16 BFG A/Ts load range D on 7.5 x 16 rims. While running the ECDD I kept dropping the pressure to get the correct amount of bulge and smoother ride. Went all the way down to 8 psi and the tire looked right and ride looked better but then noted a lot of side sway. I did no further adjusting but think 10-12 psi should be about right. This trailer weighs 750# unloaded, guessing about 1100 on this trip.

Replaced the shocks on my trailer today and what a PITA that was. Back in the day all one had to worry about was length and mounting style; eye or stud. Now there is a zillion mount styles and then you got to throw in metrics. While the parts man searched his massive catalogs I used my iPhone (love that thing!) and fairly quickly found something close. Eyes and bushings were different but I figured I could swap stuff around from old to new. That's where the pain part came from swapping around the bushings. New ones did not want to come out and old did not quite fit. About two hours later and lots of pounding, twisting, pushing and plenty of WD-40 and all was done. Oh how I wish I'd gotten a number off those old shocks but we had cut off the gravel shield to be able to watch travel.

Last run down in SE Utah revealed a new problem. The rear tires on the FJ threw gobs of mud all over the trailer. I'm going to have to fabricate a shield like is often seen on Auzzie trailers to deflect the mud and gravel. Mud flaps on the FJ too.

Mud flaps,yes.
What you see in Auzzie is fo rprotecting the window in the tailgate, from rocks that 've hit the trailer and 've been thrown back on the back of the car.

Looking good ace. So your getting a different tent huh?

Yep, the Hannibal is too slow to open and close and quite difficult to close with bedding inside. The Columbus will be much faster and lots of room for bedding, even a fat pillow. Though as I've gotten more used to the Hannibal it has become faster. But already have a buyer as soon as the Columbus arrives.

Next is electric brakes with parking brake.

Located the brakes with parking from Dexter but nobody seems to know how the parking brake is actuated or what is supplied to make them work. The online diagram shows what appears to be normal electric brakes with a small arm that moves the shoes via a cam. But what moves this lever is the mystery. My hunch is that I will have to use the cable system and hand brake out of a small truck. Anyone done this before?

Brakes installed and working great, but no parking brake yet. Did the Kokopelli Trail last week and the trailer handled Rose Garden Hill just fine. I guess because the trailer is so light I did not have to adjust the controller when going from pavement to dirt as is usually the case. Set to very low and it was fine. I think I will check with Adrenalin Trailers to see if I can use their hand brake system.

Great build, Great info, and I really like your trailer.. Can't wait to see what you do about the brakes.. I'm in the process of building an M416 that I just picked up and have been wondering about putting electric brakes on it, as well as a few other items..

Ace.

You guys came down Rose Garden correct? Some one said you were going up, just curious. Trailer looks great as I expected it would. Hope to see it at the Expo. Working like crazy to get the new one done, but may have to bring my prototype for camping. I am going to set up the second fox wing on it though, and put the mega battery in it if I do not bring the new one. Looking forward to seeing your dog and Doug.
