Black roof? Isn't it hot in KC in the summer time?

I like the re-upholstery job. How much was it if you don't mind me asking? Been thinking about doing mine too and adding the heated seat setup also. It's not super cold in CA but it is at the ski resorts.

Looks awesome so far, great job on the interior!

I agree with fatrat, the OME suspension is pretty sweet, I've had mine in now for nearly 2 months and I love it. Granted its a little different between your year and my 95, but still, they make quality stuff. I ended up paying around $550 for rear springs, front and rear shocks, not cheap, but not terribly expensive either, and it's mild enough that you shouldn't have to make any other mods due to the suspension change (correct me if I'm wrong guys, at least that was the case with my SR).

Still, seems that you're on the right path. Keep us updated, you might want to start a build thread with all that you're doing just to keep it organized ;).

Nice project! I completely agree with starting a build thread. I look forward to your progress and wish you the best of luck.

Thanks guys, I will try and answer all questions...1st off answer one for me...how do I begin a build thread???

1. Diamond plate is going to be Rhino-lined as the shovel/pick axe will surely ruin any other kind of finish as it will move around

2. Black roof...YES it gets hot in KC in the summer, I was going to go white but then found this awesome pic of a Landrover 110 ICE edition and fell in love with the paint scheme and decided to emulate it. With that said, my wife has a black car and it gets just as hot (possibly a bit more) than our other cars. Plus, the A/C in the Montero works awesome...so I'm going with looks and see where it gets me!

3. Re-upholstery job....I love leather, after getting my 1st car/truck with leather I decided I would never go back to cloth....with that said, I question the wisdom of leather in this vehicle. Daily driver it will be ok, but when we go camping and floating (kayaking) I envision moisture issues. I may invest in some cheap throw over covers for those such times.

Leather cost $1500 for 4 squares...whats a square? He told me at the time but now I forget, I think 15 sq feet but not sure. Carpet $500, heated driver and passenger seat elements $150 so that is $2,150.00 US money then labor for all $1,050...GRAND TOTAL $3,200.00...everyone that sees the job is simply amazed that I paid $3,200 for EVERYTHING. This winter the leather seats were a life/butt saver!!!

Here is a picture of the Landrover Defender 110 ICE edition I am modeling the Montero after.

To answer your question about the build thread, if you look at the first page you'll see a few threads with "build" in the title, so you start a thread and can title it "ktmk36 Montero build thread" or something like that, and then in that thread, any time you do something to your rig that you want to share, post it, that way if people want to stay up to date with your project, they have one single place to look, rather than having to look through multiple threads to find something.

Very important though, one thing you definitely need need us pictures, or you'll be eaten alive by everyone on the board ;). But from the looks of it, you shouldn't have that problem.

My hood is blacked out but it's no different than having a black vehicle. I choose black to keep glare down especially when using the roof top lights. Glad you're not keeping the diamond plate all shiny, someone might think you were driving a jeep....

I can vouch for the getting of ******** from not having pictures or enough for that matter. :snorkel:

A flat black hood makes sense to minimize glare. A black roof would make sense if you wheeled in cold temps like the Arctic Model is designed for. Being that I wheel the SW, I'll opt for a white roof. YMMV.:ylsmoke:

we only get 3 months of REAL summer here with temps in upper 80's lower 90's, June, July August. April and May in 70's and 80's and Sept as well. Rest of time in 60's and much lower in winter
Don't tell me you don't plan on wheeling anywhere else but MO? Well it does make sense if that's where you wheel 80% of the time or more...

Man, I'm embarrassed to show pics of my Montero. I do love it though. Picked it up less than 2 months ago. I've had BFG A/T tires installed, and have just replaced shocks, front brake rotors and pads, alternator, battery, thermostat, and had the A/C charged (Fresno summers are brutal). I've also re-painted the window trim and grill black.

I'm a super noob at working on cars/trucks, especially on an older vehicle like this. How do you guys typically go about looking for either OEM replacement or aftermarket parts?

I'm interested in adding a brush guard sometime in the near future, but am unable to find one anywhere. Also I would like to replace my left turn signal lens since that has a small chunk missing.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. And anyone else from California, planning to stop around Fresno/Yosemite sometime?

Thanks all,

Jonathan

No need to be embarrassed at all, dude. That truck is damn clean. Kudos!

Just realized I've been watching this thread for more than a year, but haven't shared a picture of mine yet.

EDIT: Three cans of plain old orange Rustoleum on a Saturday morning. Yes. That is overspray.

89 SWB, 2.6L 5-spd. "Aussie crawler gears," Starion LSD, NO AC. (Which is going to suck this week, as we're expecting 118°F by the weekend and it's my daily.)

As for being new to working on them, we all gotta start somewhere. Welcome to the fray, mate.

That is sweet. I've been looking around for brush guards, but have been unable to find any. Did you have yours custom made? If you would be willing to share your source for that, I would be very grateful.

Also, did you put a small lift on it? I think that Montero looks really good...

Thanks for the info.

Jonathan

It's a 20+ year old rig so nobody makes the brush guards any more. Plus I rarely if ever recommend them simply because while looking OK, unless you spend 95% of your time in the brush, they actually cause more damage on the roads than what they can prevent. They simply cannot withstand even basic impacts and will typically fold into your front end causing more damage than a simple hit on the bumper would have.

If you like the look but want to retain the protection, buy a bull bar. You probably won't find one new so plan to search diligently on craigslist etc. You can usually snatch up an ARB bumper for a lot less than if it were new ($250-400 is what I'd look for) then modify it to fit your Mitsu.

HTH.

Hi Jonathan
Thank you for the compliment.
I looked for bumpers and guards for a long time before I desided to make my own. I used a guard off a Range rover and cut it down to fit. I built the bumper later then tied them together. there is a place for a winch behind the bumper to. I get into alot of trees and limbs here so it has helped saved my turn signals. I've taken a few limbs in the wind shield so I'm thinking about adding some cables that go up to the rack. Removable of course. I dont have much experience raming it into cars to see if it will buckle. Ill try to find one high enough so I can give it a try.
The suspension has Ironman springs and torsion bars. It also has a 2"body lift.
You should post your pictures to. Its nice to see others toys.
