As for tubes and not running them in wheels marked "tubed"……the only drawback is the lack of bead retention rib in the wheels them selves (and the warning in the owners manual stating not to use them without tubes). This can lead to bead separation at "emergency" low tire pressures. I have found that to be somewhere below 12psi. Above that I can't imagine the tires being very easy to loose. I have never lost one (above 12psi) and use them very hard indeed, below that and they will come off. Running BFG MT's, both new and old style. I think I have had the wheels since they came off a new NAS 110 in mid 90's and had three sets of tires on them. I have several other sets of these wheels and really had no issues at all without tubes.

As for BFG ATs sucking. If they are more than 3 yrs old they do. They get hard and performance suffers. Problem is they will last longer than a bad politician.

A little Defender barometer reading. I've also had several ECR trucks in the shop that have had tubeless tires (BFG) on tubed rims, and they don't do anything up there that is not "correct". Says it several times in the website (not tire specific, but you'll get the idea pretty quickly).

At 15 psi if you slam sideways into a mud wall, you can get mud in the bead. This leads to all kinds of fun issues during the 2 hour drive home.

As for the BFG ATs. As long as you don't have thick mud or mud hills, they are great tires. But when you've got that incline with that nice swollen Carolina clay after 2 days of rain...you can forget it.

Yup, there are always the extreme cases but I can't say I have ever had an issue with any tire / rim at 15psi and mud in the bead is an issue which is easy to address. If it was difficult the folks at this years VOT might not have made it out of VT.
