Ugly trim no more on the Sport...

I tend to spray 2-3 coats depending on your definition of a coat... the first is usually light for initial tacking and I get heavier as I go. I would say 3 total coats. But I dont wait 30 minutes between coats. I just let it flash enough to not run. Usually a minute or 2. The goal being to get it an even gloss. If you can get it all wet at once and minimize the dry spray and over spray. Hard on the windows cause the whole thing is connected. So I like to spray it a bit heavier at each coat to keep the finish evenly wet. Comes out the most uniform.

On the window trim/ mirrors, 3 wiper arms and step side bars I used a total of 2 cans.

Hey redraif, good job bro. It looks fantastic. I'm about to start a similar project like this on my Raider. What are your thoughts on adhesion promotors for the plastic parts like the rear view mirrors?

Thank you.

I've had more problems then not with adhesion promotors. I've tried bulldog and duplicolor spray cans. Back prior to 2000, they worked great. But in the last 10 years, something has changed in the formulation.

We tried to paint some interior pieces on the mustang. So to be safe I used the promoter. Well it crazed something fierce. It was horrible. It sprayed gloppy too. I returned the can. Next one, same issue. Thank goodness it was only one piece. I kept stopping when it acted up. Now mind you... this was not a sloppy prep job. The piece was stripped of contaminates by sanding so much it took off the factory color. I wiped with alcohol and then paint prep. It should have been fine. So I stripped the original piece a third time and skipped the promoter. Worked perfect.

Some would say the 3rd prep was the charm. Well I might agree if we didn't have 10 other pieces from the same car that only received the initial identical prep job. I sprayed them without the promoter and they were perfect. Since then I have discontinued the use of that stuff. I just prep like crazy and sand the part good to give the paint something to grip. So far so good. I have done painting in two interiors and several plastic exterior pieces.

The real test will be my junkyard front grille. I'm going satin black instead of chrome. I got a black at the yards but it had too many issues and had to be resprayed. I will see just how well the finish does up front on the sport.

On a side note.... the civics semi gloss painted plastic side mirrors have held up great since 2007 without any adhesion promotor.

Thank you!
Has anyone matched the Alpine White on the sports to a Dupilcolor spray can avail at the parts store? Need to do some touch ups...

So to respond to my own question..until we buy a new front bumper... I will attempt to repair the old one. It's trashed anyway, so I can't make it any worse... LOL!

I know the logical fix would be to go to a shop that mixes and sells paint and have them match it to the factory code. Well this bumper is junk and I don't want to drop the cash or waste good paint on it. This is just a temporary deal till I buy a new bumper.

I have tried to find a true Duplicolor Mitsubishi matching spray paint, but there is none available. I even emailed Duplicolor and they ignored me. But I was so set on a factory match I did not even think about it, this rig sat outside for 15 years. There is no way a factory paint match is going to ever match what is on there now. The clear coat has actually yellowed. I have a few chips in the clear and the base coat is whiter. Grrr…

What to do? I took the truck to Advance and they let me take every can of white they had outside to match the cap to the body. I picked the closest and bought them out. I pray the actual paint matches the cap. If so, I will get this color from other Advance Autos to maintain a stock pile.. :) Then its easy enough to have a shop even mix to match it if need be…

Here is the can in the garage with florescent lights. I went around to various panels to show how close it seems. At Advance it was out in the sun and was still this darn close. What do you all think? You think it might do the trick?
