WK2 Grand Cherokee Off-Road Impressions

I hate going to the dealer too, but it was worth it. Warranty covers the cost, of course.

Yea, the warranty is nice. But its a hassle with my schedule to get it over there.

I have been driving the vehicle off and on down for the past 2 weeks and the engine/transmission continues to do weirder and weirder things. Guess I am going to have to take it in.

It should get a lot better, especially if you have an earlier build and never have had any updates applied. :smiley_drive:

I have an extra set of 18s with 255/70-18s (I don't think 265/70 will fit), PM me if you're interested and relatively local...

So long as you use factory offset wheels, like the Mopar Winter Wheels or the Mopar off road wheels the 265/70-18s fit. I have Cooper AT3's in that size on my 2014 WK2 on the winter wheels. It's tight but there has not been any rubbing at any height setting and I have over 2k miles on them now. No serious off road trips yet but plan on some exploring in the next few weeks. It does jump curbs a lot better now :)

Hi all,

New here, and in my first SUV (2015 Grand Cherokee Overland 4x4). Thinking about trying to do a "mini" overland journey sometime in the near future, so this thread is very applicable to me. Just recently outfitted mine with all the mopar skid plates as the ORAII package was going to be a 2 month wait...

Just wanted to introduce myself to the minority on the forum that don't have a Land Rover or Land Cruiser :wavey:

Welcome, porkbellies. I'm another interested WK2 owner and I do take it offroad although I don't have a lot of experience yet. My JGC is my do it all rig, daily driver and road trip rig. I've done some trails and am happy with what it can do, despite having the 20" wheels with /50 rubber. I'll get taller tires when these wear out. The WK2 is a very comfortable ride and I like that.

Do you have stock /50 Fortera rubber, or something else? I was thinking about replacing mine with 265/50 Terra Grappler G2s for a trip to Big Bend, but not sure if it's necessary - might just save the cash for the trip. Not like I'm crawling Moab...

I went to Big Bend in January in my XJ with my brother-in-law in his stock 100 cruiser. We met some "volunteers" in the middle of Black Gap road. These were the extra weird kind who stare at you like they want to know what your brain tastes like or something when they ask if you have enough water and fuel. Anyway, they were in a bone stock Dodge Dakota that looked like the tires were just inner-tubes because of how bald they were. The only damage either of us got on the trails there was he smashed his trailer light harness, which was bolted to the bottom of the hitch under the bumper, so it was pretty low.

I would just save the cash for the trip.

I currently have a 2011 JKU Sahara with some mods, including the 2.5" AEV lift. I am considering a switch to the GC to increase my tow capacity. The most aggressive trail I have ever driven, and likely will ever drive, is the Alpine Loop from Ouray to Animas , last summer. The road was pretty rough, but I felt fairly confident tackling it with my JKU. So, a few questions for GC owners:

1. Is the limited with the off-road package the way to go? I don't anticipate anything more difficult than the Alpine Loop.

2. I can't find anything other than a V6 in my area. I don't think that is what I want. What are the advantages to the hemi, v8, or eco diesel? I tow a travel trailer and might upgrade to a larger one like an airstream.

3. Anything I should know when buying?

Really, I would get a motor home and put the Jeep on a trailer behind. Takes care of your living area concerns and if you ever break your Jeep, you have a way to get it home. I've been doing it for years but I have a big yard to park things in.

Not interested.

For the WK2, i will suggest getting the Mopar rock rails, or sliders. I have the sliders on mine. While I have yet to really test them, they do help protect the rocker area.

I have a Limited with ORA2. I don't feel like I'm missing anything.

I'd get something other than the standard V6 if you want to tow anything more than a small trailer. The Hemi is proven reliable and powerful. The EcoDiesel is newer, so there might be some teething issues, but I have one and the fuel efficiency is quite good (averaging 26.8mpg over the last 42k miles). The fact that the EcoDiesel is turbocharged will help at higher altitudes, but there is some turbo lag to get used to. Diesel emissions systems can be a trouble spot on a lot of modern diesel powertrains, although I haven't had any issues yet.
