New guy looking to replace his beloved Cherokee, focus on Montero

Trailer, i don't think i'd want to flat tow 2000 miles.

A 2.5 i REALLY want just popped up about 20 minutes away from the Gen3 i have lined up for my wife. Towing it home is substantially cheaper than two plane tickets and 4000 miles worth of Montero gas mileage.

Adult me is saying it might not be the smartest idea. Young adventuresome kid says "Hell yes." Twisted logic says: "If the Gen3 breaks down, you already have a backup tow vehicle on the trailer."

Where are the vehicles located at?

With lots of mountains to drive I definitely wouldn't try it.

Agreed, Its not only the safety of you and others in your vehicle, but its also the safety of others on the road. If you are flying out to pickup both rigs, would you really have time to install trailer brakes? With trailer you would be way over the max tow capacity. Brakes are first effected.

You might consider renting a truck from U-Haul or something. Maybe even Enterprise? I definitely wouldn't want to tow it with the other Monty.

just pay someone to do it, i shipped S14 from SC to OH for $600 - fast, easy and no worries about any problems on the road

Route is south, doesn't hit the rough parts.

Uhual car haulers have them built in.

Are you saying tow both with a truck from U-Haul? That sounds way scarier to me.

Shipping quotes so far have been so expensive that the cheap purchase price of the vehicle is completely negated plus some. :(

I can do two fly and drives if it comes down to it. :) And that's probably what it'll come down to. Seems everyone thinks it's a horrible idea besides the Gen3 owner and my wife, so i'll defer to you guys. :D

*hijack warning- Not everyone thinks it a horrible idea...I'm flying down to SD in 2 weeks to get my gen2.5 and driving mine home. :) But then again, I'm not driving nearly as far as you would be. I think it's a great way to become familiar with your new rig and an adventure to boot. It's all a matter of what it means to you. If it were me (and I was bringing my old lady with me), I'd want to ride together and not in separate vehicles for that long of a trip (although that could be a bonus for some). I'd hold off on the 2.5 and wait for something to pop up closer to you. BUT- If the perfect 2.5 came up, and i just couldn't pass on it, I'd somehow make it all work...

Good luck!

Nah the fly and drive is fine, i've done a few already. I think what they don't like is the idea of buying a Gen3 AND a Gen2.5 in SD, and towing the Gen2.5 2000 miles home with the Gen3. :p
