Distilled water is a better option unless you know what coolant went in last - as my Toyota is looked after by me, I have a spare litre of Toyota Red coolant in the back with the other spare fluids.
The other day I had to go help a friend who'd boiled her Ford Ranger PK diesel towing a horse float up a hill. Only took 3 or 400mm of water and it was right again, so quite often you don't need a lot - I used distilled water as I didn't know what coolant went in last and rather than having an interesting mixture, decided this was the better bet.
