Great photos, and it looks like it was a terrific experience.

Just as a matter of interest, I don't really like this example of winch rigging, though:

It's a small point, but the strop should be way further down the trunk of the small tree, where the snatch-block changes the pull direction by nearly 180 degrees. I trust he pointed out that the pull on the tree is nearly twice that on the stuck Disco! There's an unnecessary metre of leverage on the tree, which might easily be under a pull of several tons.

Excellent point, however, this image was actually taken after the vehicle was recovered from the ditch. When the truck was in the depression the strap around the tree had to be placed at the elevation you see so that a downward angle on the winch line could be acheived to reach the recovery point on the truck, otherwise it would have been pulling the line across and down into the dirt apex at the top of the ditch. That hole was a lot deeper than it looks in the photo (as they almost always do).

Oh the memories, good coffee and sausage, egg and cheeses at the country store, but don't ask to use the bathroom! Just be glad that long hill wasn't covered in mud, or maybe it was, I can't really tell from the photo. Glad to see you guys had a great time.

That skinny tree was pretty flexible and we talked about moving the strop down the tree to reduce the leverage. I think it stayed put, as Jeff said, to get an upward pull.

Saw a nice looking white 60 in his stash there too... :peepwall:

Phil and all, very nice review and excellent photos. Great job documenting everyone. :clapsmile

It's amazing to see how a little ol' forum can bring so many together for a fun and informative get-together. Nicely done, kudos to all involved.

I haven't been able to post messages for a while b/c of password issues on the forum, but that's solved now. Anyhow, it was nice meeting everyone--I had a really good time w/ the off-road driving course! I understand Bruce is starting an offroad training area down in Virginia, and that is a heck of a lot closer for me, so I'll probably be doing that instead of coming up to CT, but who knows... I maybe down for another trip up to CT, so keep me in the loop. BTW, I didn't post pictures b/c they are mostly similar to the ones already posted. If you want them, I'm happy to provide them--just let me know. Later, -Jon
