Overland Expo 2009 pics and opinon

I found that the Expo put everything in context.

I'd been the instructor for the tire repair clinics, which provided the basic information.

Jim O'Neal provided the context. During the banquette he told me about a friend driving in tracks so deep and narrow you couldn't open the doors of the vehicle.

He had a puncture, but couldn't change the tire out as the track was just a few inches wider than the vehicle.

I didn't get the answer on how he solved the problem, but my mind has been working on it ever since.

I did have fun at this event and I did get some great infomation from some of the classes, the tire repair class showed me some things I didn't know, like stitching a tire sidewall. I swear Martyn can do tire repairs in his sleep !
Travis from Sierra Pacific had some great info and pictures of his trips. The first aid class was ok, I did like the new black bag Adventure Medical Kits used for the Mountain Medic kit.
I also enjoyed the free beer on Friday and Saturday, the steak dinner was also great.
I went to a seminar or class every hour for Friday and Saturday and I agree the time constraints limited the amount of info that was presented and you do have to start out with the very basics, I was simply expecting it to be more advanced, maybe next year they can have basic and advanced classes.
I don't do any rockcrawling with my truck and most of the trips I go on only need 4 wheel drive or ARB engaged once in a while, I do understand what overland driving is and I have made several trips to Mexico and 1 trip to Panama but most of my offroad driving experience is in the southwest, I was hoping to get a chance to drive my truck on a challangeing course with terrain I am not as familar with while still in a controlled enviroment. The driving course was as challenging as driving Bulldog Canyon here in the east valley.
I will most likly be at next years expo but on a day pass.

The tire repairs I do in my sleep are much better than the ones I do when I'm awake :sombrero:

Roamingaz, Thanks for the cool pics of my rig. I have read all the posts and there is truth to them all. Improvements could be made to anything as I am sure they will be implemented at next year's expo. I will admit I had bigger expectations for the driving course, but I have high expectations for everything I do.

This will teach me to calm thoes expectations....not sure I should admit this though. When I drove the course I accidentally drove it with only the front two engaged, crazy I know and get this.....I had my Father-in-law with me (his first exposure to any of this) and my remark to him after walking the course and receiving great instructions form Nick was "get in this will be cheese cake" Well after the first failed attempt...... and finally figuring out I was in two wheel drive "front only" !!!! and Nick leaning in the window and asking how long I had owned my SMB, If I was ok.........well you know the rest. !! corrections were made and we completed the course. But not without RaZZZZZ!!!!

Very humbling very very.....Now my Father-in-law thinks all the pics he has seen of my past trips were of someone else or fake. We had lots of laughs over it and all-in-all a GREAT time.

Thanks to the Overland Team for a fun filled week end.

P.S. I think I can agree with all the comments above!! is that wrong? :)

Hi Roamingaz, we just got back from OvExpo last night (took the long way home through Death Valley:sombrero:). I did not see you at the Expo, you should have stop by my campsite to say hi.

Now that I think about it I have no idea how many people from the portal forum I met there... maybe the screen names should be on the name tags!

I traded Luis a nice pink Kikoy for his silence on the matter of "The Belt". :victory:

You should have seen me running around Death Valley in my Kikoy! Best thing I got at OvExpo (except for all the goodies I got from Ho at Expedition Exchange):sombrero:.

We Brits always call it "in good style"! The most important thing, as on an overland trip, is that you have a blast. And I know you did! Well, I know I did!

Oh, Chris, sweet ride by the way.

Cheers,
Nick.

For a moment I thought you said "sheep", and that merely confirmed your taffy-ness!

:jumping:

Pleasure to meet you mate, if you're ever in CO I've a D90 you can borrow.

Nick.
