Tall Skinny Tire?

How tall are the Q78s? 16x8 rims? And now for the dumbest question in the history of expo..... Drumroll please.... How stupidly loud are they on the highway? Swarm of angry bees? Rusty chainsaw with no muffler??

I like the Co-Op Grip Spur but it look like it would be really loud and ware fast. Where as the Superlug is aggressive but with a titer tread for a more friendly ride.

Yeah, the Grip-Spur, IMO, is if you're upwards of 90% off-road.

The Grip Spurs are fairly loud, but the bad part is the high-speed handling--it can get a bit squirrelly. I assume it is because the vehicle is primarily supported by those twin, unbroken center lugs and they may be squirming a bit. That was my experience on a relatively low-mile set. Perhaps it gets better as the tread depth wears down. They do self-clean well on muddy roads.

Super Swamper advertises them as 35.5” tall and 10.8 wide. I am running narrow 7” wide wheels with them at 40 psi and air down to 15 to 18 psi when on the trail.

Hehe, yes, they are loud on the pavement and wear quickly. The tires sound more like a turbo prop airplane when rolling down the road and get louder as the tread wears. The last set of Q78’s lasted from summer 2002 until this past June but the truck only saw around 10,000 miles during that time. It mainly goes back and forth on trips to the mountains a few times a year and racks up a little over 1,000 miles per year most years.

I got the current set of Q78’s ($900) in June before my buddies and I ran a 2,000 mile trip back and forth to the Arizona strip and all over in between. The Super Swamper TSL Q78’s are great tires but are loud and wear quickly but I am okay with that as they serve my needs perfectly and it is, after all, purpose built truck. If I ran more highway I would definitely be looking for an set of all-terrain tires to have around as well…..and an overdrive transmission. :coffee:

I am a firm believer of tall skinny tires and wouldn't run anything else for an off-road rig.

Here is mine with Super Swamper TSL Q78 X16. It is a great tire that quickly changes personalities with simple air pressure adjustments. I wish I could find an All-Terrain tire in this size as well. You would be surprised how well this big old heavy truck handles on the highway with these tires and how it well it works in the snow, mud, desert, and sand. Of my circle of friends that run the common 35x12.50's I am not the one that has issues getting around when the trail surface gets challenging.

Another advantage, on my body style truck anyway, is the fact the tall skinnies don't rub the fenders when the suspension is fully articulated plus you don't need a red neck style ten foot tall lift kit to run these tall skinnies.

My 2005 Silverado 2500HD with Cooper Discoverer S/T 255/85R16's. Skinny, but not as tall as I would like for a full size rig.

Do you think you could fit the Q78 x16 on your 2500HD? Is your HD suspension stock?

I think they will fit the HD. I bought 4 extra stock wheels to mount the old Q78’s for spares when we went to the AZ strip. I have been meaning to toss them on the HD to see how well they fit. Maybe this weekend I throw them on and take some pictures.

No HD’s the suspension isn’t entirely stock, as front bump stops trimmed and torsion bar keys installed with the bars cranked (Cognito upper control arms coming soon). The rear suspension has three extra leaf springs added from its past life as a weed sprayer tanker truck, which the beefier spring packs will come in handy once I get the pop up camper for it (Looking at a Four Wheel Camper or Hallmark).

The plan is the HD will be the long distance expo rig while the K10 will run the local Colorado trips.
