Oh how sweet that truck is... I don't know how people can part with these sweet diesel trucks after they've swapped, they're all just SO AWESOME!!!! I like how he has the big manual lever (is that a rear locker or his CDL???) locker engagement and the manual glow feature is great too. It seems REAL quiet from inside the cabin, am I wrong??? That looks to be a great motor, what are the specs on it. Being an Isuzu I know it's well built, and I bet you can hot it up a bit eh ;)

Cheers

THat's cool, I just didn't hear that on the tape at all, it sounded SO quiet compared to like the vids of 1KZ converted 4Runners and trucks. I could live with the clatter though ;) has it got good power under-foot??? I'm just imagining it's a blast to drive eh. I'll bet that little oil-burner just pulls all day long. Too bad I'm not in the market cause this looks like a nice truck that someone spent quality time on.

Thanks Rudi

With some luck o' the Irish, divine intervention from Rudolf Diesel on his bday and some "creative" financing....I just signed all the papers and purchased this vehicle today!! soooo stoked! Hope its a good un...dont know much about Discos or Rovers in general so I'll be asking lots of questions as soon as I take delivery sometime next week.:victory:

Just wanted to add some more info for the curious/interested:

Custom Features: -Isuzu 3.9 4BD1T turbo diesel. -NV3500 5-speed transmission. -Rover LT230 transfer case with center locking differential. -Schwitzer S200 extended tip turbo. -3 inch full exhaust. -Brand New Clutch, Re-built transmission, bearings, etc. About 50 miles on the transmission. -Dual core all aluminum radiator running G5 coolant. -Tom Woods shafts F&R CV's on both with u-joint conversion rear. -Greg Davis rear bumper and front custom front bumpers, 2'' receiver. -12K Mile Marker electric winch, really cool mount, basically invisible, very clean look. -RTE lift springs. -D1 rear spring perches. -DBA rotors and Axis Ultimates pads. -Electrically heated windshield. -Differential protection. -Dual Die Hard Batteries. -Manually controlled glow plugs. The interior is in excellent condition. It is stock with the exception of boost and egt gauges, and additional shifters. All gauges work, fuel, tach, temp, low oil, etc. No warning lights on, all in working order. The seats are tan leather, power and heated. The carpet, dash and headliners are in great condition. Air conditioning works great and is displayed in Celsius, not sure why. Currently mounted on 5 (full size spare) BFG Mud Terrains, size 255-85-16 . No rubbing, vibrating etc. The tires look new with tons of deep tread left. Full synthetic oil change on 2/1/2011 Fuel filters replaced 2/1/2011. The entire underside and bumpers are currently sprayed in Lanox MX4 heavy duty anti corrosion lubricant. The body has no rust, the chassis has light rust and that is overstating it. Things that need work: -The shifter boots and knobs are not up to the standard of the rest of the vehicle. This is all cosmetic and easily fixed. See pictures. -There is one missing dummy switch on the console. -The PCV valve currently vents to atmosphere, meaning if you really work the engine, it will eject a mist of oil from the valve cover that outlets near the transfer case. We are talking maybe 1 cup every 2,000 miles. This set-up can be re-plumbed so that it vents to the crank case or a reservoir.

link to photos of the vehicle as it sits now:

Just here...
Wow, I thought maybe that was his! Why did he sell it? That's crazy.

I see that a lot with cars, and I never understand it. People put countless time and money into a "project" and then sell it when it's done.

From what I saw on Dweb, it's a top notch build. If I were in the market, I'd be all over that. I'm surprised they don't show the engine bay in the ad, it's a work of beauty.

You should ask Doug why he sold it. "Off road use only" is one reason that seems to come to mind. He did a great job doing the conversion. The transmission died shortly after being sold (might not have been up to task being it wasnt designed for a diesel) and then theres that whole nagging thing about it not really being road legal... (medium duty diesels are not EPA legal in a light duty package)

Viggen you're killing me here dude... This would make any swap by any non-US diesel "not road legal either." Yet never once (seriously, not once) have I heard of anyone having his rule enforced by... anyone. It's basically a non issue. The only rules that matter are what your local state (and/or county, depending on local smog restrictions) dictates in terms of legality and emissions compliance and in terms of titling. For example it takes a little work in Salt Lake county but is very easy in Summit county, where I live. They also re-issue a title that essentially makes the vehicle compliant in other states.

One of the most underrated aspects of pretty much any car but pretty much mandatory for any diesel conversion is definitely sound proofing. Costs about $100 on average and do at least the firewall and the floor under the drivers seats. FJ62s are pretty loud stock (I have a stock FJ62). My neighbor down the road with his 4BD-2T in his FJ62 did it after a year, literally night and day difference.

If this helps...

when I finally got around to it on my FJ55 it was also a massive massive improvement and difference...

Not too worried about title/registration OR emissions as I live in WYOMING....

I already have the "fatmat" soundproofing material ready to install as soon as I have time this spring.

As for the tranny? only time will tell how it holds up, if everything goes pear shaped at least the back of the engine is GM bolt pattern which will give me some options. Maybe SM465? I will cross that bridge when I get to it....

Dieselcruiserhead---the next time I'm down your way I'll try and swing by, I'd love for you to check this rig out and any advice you can offer.

Absolutely... Also, the guy with the FJ62 with the 4BD-1T is also a wealth of great real-world knowledge. They are a super simple engine just like a 4BT. They are in fact very similar to 4BTs but have about 1/3rd to 1/2 of the negative aspects like noise and/or roughness. The only drawback is the turbo doesn't provide the air so you have to address this. Looks like it's already address on this one (as Bill did as well). This is about the best thread on the 4BD-1T out there: http://forum.ih8mud.com/diesel-tech-24-volts-systems/128585-isuzu-4bd1t-swap.html We also have a section just for this engine in www.4BTswaps.com and Carcrafter22 (who just bought the www.IsuzuDieselSwappers.com company) is awesome, very personable, and loves providing tons of info about them. He also happens to be building the most ************ Ambulance expedition vehicle I've ever seen, using a kit from U Joint from this board. When you're down definitely look me up. I also make it up to Jackson pretty regularly, or at least on a good year... :)

cheers,
Andre

Let us all know. ;) I would love to see this truck in person, and I need an excuse to get up to PC to kick tires. :)

This worked! Thanks!

Heading to Utah tomorrow for the first real "test" of the Landy. So far its been peachy...smokes a bit on startup, may have to do some adjustments for the altitude here.

one question...what should I consider too high for exhaust temps? its been running around 100-115F degrees.

The "shakedown" went well 1800+ miles and no major issues, well...besides setting off the three amigos on a Safeway speedbump and a leaky AC compressor. The engine is pretty awesome off road, tons of torque from anywhere. On the highway its not a speed demon but it settles in right around 65 and feels like it could do forever. Averaged about 23 mpg. prolly pick up a few mpgs when I ditch the MTs. Really diggin it so far...

Cynical old bastard
If the gear box does go then try an LT85. I know of this engine and 'box combo doing 200k plus towing with no problems
