Question about hydraulic systems on a series IIa

Hot dip galvy is a far better method of protection. Doesn't chip like PC does. I think we've all seen PC'd side steps or bull bars on vehicles that are bubbled and peeling. Galvy will also get everywhere on the chassis, this is very important as Series chassis rot from the inside out.
Galvy series frames have been around for a long time now and aren't that expensive all things considered.

PC is pretty variable in quality, but good quality PC is very very tough. I spoke to a local sandrail manufacturer and he has need using North American Powder Coating in Tucson and been amazed at how well that PC holds up. You have to bend the suspension components into a pretzel to crack the PC. However, I would still galvanize a frame rather than PC it. It looks better on a Land Rover.

Not to mention that galvanizing is self healing. Scratch it, and the zinc migrates to fill the void.
As for rebuilding vs. replacing the brake components, rebuilding often works, but for a vehicle that age for you not to factor in the cost of new components would be foolish, or at least delay your driving fun if you have a budget you have to work within. Sure, give rebuilding a shot, but allow that you may have to replace them. If rebuilding, be sure to get some Girling red grease to coat the insides of the dust boots with.

Powder coat is very tough. Most problems with rusting occur because the parts haven't been prepared properly by having rough edges smoothed out (so they tend to coat thinly or even remain exposed) and haven't had the surfaces cleaned of grease, rust or mill scale. If the parts are media blasted and etch washed before coating, you will have few problems unless you give it a damned good scrape. It's a shame Mantec haven't learnt this yet.

You still can't coat or prep the inside of the series chassis adequately with PC. That's where they rust from.

Galvanize the whole thing, PC the outside, spray POR-15 or LPS-3 (the sticky one?) or whatever on the inside?

And are there any areas in particular that should have drain/weep holes added?

I'm not sure if I just need to start a new thread or not..but here are some more pictures of the 66 IIa I posted before. I should have some pictures of the frame and the bulkhead for the inside with the carpet pulled back soon.

I also noticed from some of the other pictures I got that the Landy in parked on a hill pointing downward and I don't see any chocks so I am guessing that means the parking brake works.

Sorry for getting so far off topic.
Those pictures look promising but as you mentioned, get some with the carpet pulled back. Non the less, I've seen many series rovers completely rotten in the places you have the pictures of so far. This one looks like it may be a relatively solid start. Keep pursuing the info on it though.

I agree. It looks to me like the footwells have been replaced, and depending on how the work was done can be a very good thing. So far, so good.

You may just have to make the trip down to see for yourself. I know it doesn't help the Rover Fever, but I would resign yourself to making two trips. One to check out the potential candidates, and if you find one you like, another to bring it home. That way the whole purpose of the "look-see" trip doesn't become to bring a Rover home and you can make a somewhat reasoned decision after a few cold showers.

Like I said, bring a big screwdriver and inspect/tap everything.

I'm looking into heading over to see it Saturday and I am planning to bring a screwdriver, magnet (for the few steel areas) and a flashlight-i am also planning on leaving check book at home but I can't be held responsible if it looks clean and I give him some "hold" money. Hopefully I'll have some pictures of the bulkhead sans carpet and frame to show you all before then. Thanks again for all the help!

Am I crazy to think that if someone put carpet in their rover they probably took good care of it in general?
I am also guessing that the brown leather(?) seats are a redo as LR offered one color-elephant grey/black.

No--It generally means that they wanted less noise/vibration in the cabin or they wanted to stay (slightly) warmer in the winter, though occasionally they do install carpet for asthetics...

Well, I'm going to have to wait unti January..... the owner of the 66 took it or is taking it deer hunting over Christmas/New Years so I won't be able to go see it this weekend unles things change now that there is some interest. I don't want to tell the shop to have him not take it as I'm interested because I won't have the money for it until January (4th quarter commision/profit sharing) and I don't know when I could pick it up before then anyway. I've got a project to finish in San Francisco next week, then we are at Christmas and I maybe gone during the week after on another project. I guess I need to work on patience if I'm going to own one of these so here's a way to start!

I guess this does tell me that it runs well enough for the owner to take it on an extended trip (silver lining).

Maybe I'll start some more threads about the things I wanted to do with it, like updateing the seat belts and if anyone has put a leather or suede steering wheel cover on or installing an overdrive.

I've installed a lace on leather steering wheel cover, but they aren't common to find as the wheel is larger than most.

No, I actually got it either from Kingsborne Products, or Nissonger, back it the 80's when I was one of their dealers.
