Larger tank for the XJ?

I'm curious if anyone has found and mounted a larger gas tank to their XJ?

I did a google search last week and didn't come up with a whole lot of anything...
I did find an Aussie company that makes a 125 litre tank, and emailed them.
They got back to me adn said the tank should keep the stock ground clearance and departure angles, but would cost $700AUD and the shipping would likely be close to the same. So, $1400 AUD, about $1200USD and just a bit more Canadian $$$.
I personally have a long list of things I could buy with that much money that would be ahead of the larger gas tank.
But I wouldn't mind keeping an eye open for a less expensive option.
I'm not sure if it would be worth while discussing the possibilites of a group buy or not - I would imagine to drop the costs on each unit significantly, you'd likely have to fill a sea can...

interesting.

I wonder if Genright would consider building one , or if one of their existing designs would work on the XJ, since they design them to work on a wrangler with similar rear axles, and frame dimensions...

Their tanks are still about a grand, though.

Have you heard of the breather tube mod? supposedly adds quite a bit of capacity.

the best thing you can do is go hit the junkyard. take a tape measure and see what will fit. i found a 42 gallon suburban gas tank for my wagoneer. it doubled the volume i can carry, and i threw away the old rusty tank.

The problem with newer XJ's is OBD II compliance. There was a company at one time who made bigger tanks for the older XJ's but I don't know of anyone making them for the newer Jeeps. I wish they did.

An Aussie has a write up on his site about it..adds several gallons I think. his site is called go-jeep .com? .org? can't remember but he has tons of write ups w/ great mods.:coffeedrink:

mine is completely bolt on. drilled 4 holes and used the tank straps to hold it in.

the most expensive part of the system is the fuel filler hose. around here it costs $1.60 per INCH! :Wow1::Wow1::Wow1:

you have to use the right hose or the fuel will eat the rubber.

That breather mod is pretty cool!
Talk about cheap as well, I'm going to try and do that sometime this summer.

EDIT: I just caught the note at the very top of the page "This is for metal tanks only and not the plastic ones fitted from 97 on."

I have a '98. Boo-urns... :(

Aero used to make tanks for the earlier XJ's, dont know if they are still in business.

Guy on another board was at a upull recently, found an aftermarket 30+ tank.. for around $30.. :summinabeach: It was manufactured by an outfit in Chicago. I'll dig out the thread and post the source.

Saw one on Craigslist last year in Phoenix for $200 but I had just recently purchased and installed a gas tank skid plate. :(

That would be cool!

I have only recently been dail-driving my XJ, and I just replaced both O2 sensors, so I don't have much of an idea what sort of range I currently have.

Here's the stats:

1998 XJ
4.5 Rubicon Express lift
AW$ auto tranny
30 front, 8.25 rear
Stock gears - 3.55
33-12.5R15 Hankook M/T's - the old style (RT01)

I'm very likely to fit 4.56 gears in the future, but it's a big expense to have a shop do it, so at the earliest it will be late in the summer.
I also want/need a front and rear bumper and some sliders, liking JC Offroad for the style/design, but shipping won't work for me. For the rear bumper I want a spare tire mount, as well as a jerry can mount. I might try and get a friend to help me fab up a tire and jerry mount that fits into the trailer receiver for this year so I don't have to store the spare inside the passenger compartment.

I know adding all that weight, and then putting my gear inside the Jeep is going to affect the mileage a bit, but when I had 31's on it, I could squeze about 500 km out of a tank. It would be nice to be able to keep close to that range, but I'm not sure how feasible that is...

I get about 280-310 miles per 16 gallons or so in my 20 gallon tank. Calculates out to around 17-19mpg's. (my tank won't let me fill past 16 gallons. common XJ issue, i guess)

When I first got my Cherokee I was able to put like 18 gallons in, with no issue. Thats how I know i have the larger 20 gallon tank.

thats mostly highway miles.
