Larger tank for the XJ?

Alright, I cross-posted on NAXJA to draw from as large of a knowledge base as possible.

I emailed and rec'd a reply from Aerotank - none for my year XJ, presumably they don't make anything later than 96.

Was directed to Transfer Flow, they don't seem to list Jeep replacement tanks on their site, so I'll be sending them an email this morning.

And I'll look up Northwest Metal Products and see what they offer.

Are they OBD II compliant and do you know how much?

Dont know the current price, but if you want/need the capability, thats it.

Compliant? Who cares? Again, if you want/need the capability, you do whats necessary. I am sure there is a way to make it work. As I understand it, the newer tanks did not use a return line, so there may be some gas pressure issue along with vents. There are alot of parts that are not advertised as applicable, many times its because they dont want the expense of certification. Someone who knows some basic wrench bendin should be able to mod the tank appropriately.

Its just a tank.

Actually it's not just a tank. OBD II systems use a bunch of sensors that have to work or the vehicle will not pass smog tests. Pressure tests, fuel return tests and such.

Sure you could make something work but then I would have a vehicle I couldn't drive because they would fail my smog.

Who cares???... those of us in CA and have to pass our bi-anual smog check, which includes a visual inspection and testing of evap systems now.

For me, basically any mods I do (relating to engine) need to be smog legal or it won't be done. Already a PITA to deal with the smog nazi's, don't need to add more drama to that.

I know GenRight was talking about offering one but last I heard they were looking at two options. 1- same capcity but more ground clearance, 2- loss of clearance but an extra 5-6 gallons. I believe they went with option 1, which made no sense to me as I wouldn't pay $700-$800 for the same amount of fuel but more clearance. I would rather lift it higher to solve that problem.

I checked into the on from Aus. and it was cost prohibitive to get to the US.

The guy I have emailed with, Tom, was receptive to the idea of a large shipment of tanks in a sea container, but the number would have to be high enough to make it worth their while.
I don't know how many XJ gas tanks can fit into a 20' sea container, but I bet it's a lot!

x2 :coffee:

I love california, but two things I would change are:

1. 2nd amendment laws
2. Smog laws.

haha! After 31 years living here, though (born and bred, Cali-boy) its just part of how I think of things:

Safari snorkel
Hi-flow exhaust

and thats about it for engine mods...haha!!

NWMP - no go.
They got back to me just now, and at least pointed me towards Transfer Flow, hopefully that will pan out and we'll actually have an option.

Sorry to hear that you have been deemed "Not Allowed" to have an aftermarket tank. I didnt realize my recommendation had to be CA compliant.

You know, about 30% of all vehicles around here are registered in CA. I dont know why.

I'm not in California and I still have to pass an emissions test.

In fact almost any large populated area will all across the country. If you live in an area that isn't, thats great but it won't help the rest of us who do.

I exchanged emails with the folks at "The Long Ranger" in Australia about their auxiliary fuel tank. The big issue from them regarding the early versus later tanks was the hand brake routing.

I was going to compare the old to new to see if it was possible or worthwhile to change my hand brake routing to the early style routing. They made no mention of the OBD issues.

They didn't pursue the later models due to lack of interest in the earlier version (I'm guessing the Oz Jeep market is fairly small - why buy a Cherokee when you can get a diesel Patrol?).

I haven't pursued it further either as I have been consumed by working on cars for the upcoming auto-x season (June's almost upon me! Gah!!!) and haven't been able to focus on the Jeep stuff lately.

Transfer flow got back to me.
"Unfortunately we do not build a tank for your vehicle."

So, I struck out.
The only supplier that makes them is located in Australia, and there's probably 1/1000ths the Cherokee in Australia as there is in North America...
