Big Dave's M416 Build

It lifts easily for me now as is, but by the time more supports, the skin, and the tent are added that might be a bit much. Definitely looking to get some struts for it before it's "finished" so my wife can get in there too. I don't think it will be beyond what I can lift by myself when it's all done, but the struts will be nice to help hold it open, and so my wife can get in it too on her own.

Always nice for the spouse not to hurt themselves lifting the lid!! I'd be very interested to see what and how you hinge that lid as well...some pix would be gratefully accepted! Thanks for the thread!

Cheers!

Will the rtt fit ontop of the trailer? will there be an overhang?
What are the dimensions of the trailer

Going totally from memory here, but I think the tub is approx 54" wide x 71" long. The RTT folded is approx 47" wide x 71" long, and then 94" wide (will technically use this as the length) when deployed.

I'm hoping my latch and hinge idea works. The hinges are supposed to show up tomorrow so I should be able to play with them this weekend. We just sold our other ZJ and 16' trailer though, and are going to get a 26' trailer Thursday, so we'll have our hands full for a bit.

Got the crossbars for the lid welded in tonight, then we were finishing up a couple more spots when the welder started giving us fits. Hopefully we can figure out what the deal is tomorrow and get this done, we want to go camping next weekend.

Had to do the skin in 2 pieces since I couldn't easily find one piece that was big enough

Couple quick tacks on the underside to tie the skin in to the cross bars and a couple on the outer rim too

the hinges we're using, I cut it off after this pic and welded it back on straight since this was a little crooked

Painted the inside of the lid tonight so it's drying. Hoping the latches show up tomorrow, the first ones we ordered were way smaller than I anticipated. Need to caulk the seams, mount the latches, then mount the RTT!

Nice work Dave!! I need to do something with mine, wood doesn't hold up well for a lid:Wow1:

Looking at steel/aluminum for the next one. Really like your design!

Got the tent all mounted up tonight, but by the time we were done it was too dark to get pics. Might be able to get a couple tomorrow, but we're taking it out Saturday we'll definitely have some then.

I gotta say, the lid and RTT, holy heavy!!!! No struts on it right now, and it takes a LOT of effort for me to get it open. Still on the to-do list for this summer are struts and some stabilizers. Then this winter we hope to extend the tongue about a foot.

Took it out yesterday after work to test everything out, worked very well. Really need some struts for the lid though.

Random piece of tube that works perfect for propping up the lid

Pulls nicely behind the rig, noticed it a bit more with the lid and tent than without though

Would be most appreciative if you could post some detail shots of the hinges...I've never seen any like that one before...

Cheers!

Thanks for that, but I meant shots of them welded onto your lid! I can't for the life of me see how those would work on your lid, but obviously you did!!:coffeedrink:

Thank you sir!

^ X2...

I just bought those hinges for my M00's lid...

Would be nice to see how another utilized those.

also like to see more detail on the lock/latch assemblies.

thanks !
