Planning a trip in a D1

what about a 300tdi for not turning back with an empty pocket after the first 1000miles?

Yeah, diesel swap is an interesting topic as usual. Per Customs rules, any vehicle that spends time outside of North America is supposed to have proof of catalytic converter replacement before re entry into the US. If they get sticky and want me to prove cat replacement and then see a non US diesel, I might be screwed...

Yes. But as several people have said on here, they haven't had any problems getting their vehicles back in. Also, the EPA recommends removing the cat(s) prior to leaving, so they don't get destroyed and then reinstalling them after returning.

What about if she's hot

Well, if the GF sitting next to me is in to it, then, why not :Wow1:

I understand all the legal/ illegal aspects of the diesel swap. It just really doesnt make financial sense to spend that much ($4500) on a used set up and then paying more per gallon for, what in the end, isnt that HUGE of a jump in mpg in a built D1. 12mpg to 18mpg (what Ive read the 300tdi is getting in built D1's) isnt worth the jump in cost. I could pick up a few mpg by swapping in a modern design gas motor for less and make a diesel swap even less appealing. Gas is everywhere and it is cheaper.

Where do you get those figures from? My "built" 300tdi gets 22 and if I slowed down and turned off the a/c it would probably get 24.
Many get over 30 mpg (imperial gallon) in the UK. That equates to 24 per US gallon.

Thats a heck of a lot better than 12-14. I fill up for $55 and get 450 miles. My used set up was a lot less than $4500 also, closer to $3k.
My motivation was not really economy though. I just wanted to do it.

Not to discourage your daydreams, but why go all the way to the end of SA as your first long trip? Have you been out to CO and UT? Beautiful, same country so WAY less logistics, just get in the truck and drive west covered by AAA the whole way. Or head north to New England and the Canadian Maritimes.

Good point. My stock RRC gets 18 mpg on the highway. I don't consider this too bad for a small V8 in a heavy and un-aerodynamic truck. Been wanting to try the electric fan mod. Mainly because I can wire it to shut off completely during water crossings. But, this would also decrease parasitic loss, as you suggest.
