Very interesting and thanks for posting. I wonder why the big boys aren't more interested in producing adventure bikes in the 400-650cc range? Not all of us are looking for tanks.....

I like my KTM 640 Adventure and Kawasaki sure seems to sell alot of KLR 650's so I know there is a market out there.

I rode a Tiger and it was no hill climber for me! While I'm sure there is a market for the big ones, they just won't go as easily in many spots as the 650 class, IMO. My Tansalp will cruise all day at 70+ so what's the advantage of more power with more weight? :bike_rider:

70mph on the freeway out here will get you run the heck over. I cruise the slow lane at 85 mph and need to watch my back (although it seems to get better when the gas prices go up - everyone starts slowing down).

Loaded down 650's are struggling at those speeds - ask them to do it for hundreds of miles at a time & throw in 100+ degree temps - the small bikes lose their appeal pretty quick. The big bikes are just nicer when you mix hundreds or thousands of freeway miles into a trip.

Naturally, there is a down side to that size and weight - but you already know what that is. :bike_rider:

Interesting, very interesting. More choices are always a good thing. Any pictures of the bike? A search brings up nada.

A replacement for the now defunct HP2?

While not exactly cheap, could convert a KTM 690, plus there are rally kits for most manufacture's 450-500+cc machines. An Acerbis, 6 plus gallon tank and fairing isn't too much coin. Throw on a Giant Loop rear bag and hit the trail...

With the Dakar race limited to 450 cc machines for both pro and amateur, I think that manufacturers will shortly offer "Dakar replica" models to the public.

That might be a good direction, as a lot of guys are realizing lighter is better.

They did offer the 690 Rally Replica's (Not USA) to the public, of course they were $30'000.00, however most guys just want an ADV version.

The 2012 KTM 4T enduro line is finally coming with EFI.

A 450 Rally Replica does exist, non US of course.

I'm happy with my Dakar

We're really getting back to the bottom line here, aren't we? get the bike that feeds your needs. :bike_rider: I try to stay off freeways, in fact, just installed a 15 tooth countershaft sprocket to gear the bike down a bit more. So I don't need a "big" bike. My wonderful wife has just started to do short rides on pillion with me. So I like the power of my 650, rather than something smaller. Plus, I can put enough gear on the bike to fly fishing and camping for a week at a time.

The F800Gs looks like a great sized bike. Wish that Husky would come out with something in that size displacement. Just saying......Dakar 5-19-11 #4.jpgDakar 5-19-11 #2.jpg
