Typical Coolant Temperature on an 80 Series/ FZJ80 Landcruiser?

Wondering what people with 80's have for coolant temperatures?

I was up to 221 at one point this weekend, ran around at 200-212 the remainder on the road.

Full load, a/c on, 65 mph. ~100 degrees ambient temps in the Utah deserts.

Interested to hear some answers to this...how do you measure actual temp...does a scangauge measure actual temps

Roger,

Given the age of our rigs, your temp numbers are not uncommon with the factors you listed. I am curious to know more about your PM schedule for the coolant system? Do you know if the fan clutch is operating within spec? i.e. does is "roar" on start up and cycle noticeably while travelling?

I hasn't been too much over 65 this summer, but I am a rock steady 188 according to the Scan Gauge if it's 65 degrees out or 40. When I was at 8000 ft in Colorado, I rarely got over 200 in the summer going up I-70's steep grades.

Fan roars...Flush/fill about every 12 months, new Toyota red each time. I've been reading about the fan clutch oil swap. Tell me more.

You would be in trouble here in the valley of the sun

Me - 190° with outside day time temp 100°+
Clutch mod is 100% needed here in AZ and makes a huge difference

How old is your clutch fan?
How old is your radiator?

Clutch fan and radiator are original. I have 189K on the clock. I just drained the fluid and added a fresh round of coolant/water mix. I am not pulling the loads now, but I didn't hit 200 last night. It is set to be hotter today, so I will drive it around and see how it fares.

Perhaps it is time to upgrade both the radiator and the fan clutch?

I was seeing temps very similar to yours over the weekend in 95°+ heat with the a/c on. 210° was pretty easy to hit on hill climbs.

I typically see engine temps during the warmer summer months between 188-193 when driving on the interstate or around town. On steep grades the engine will climb to 195 maybe a little higher depending on the hieght and length of the grade. At stop lights the engine temp may creep up to 195-197, but quickly drop once I am moving agian. All engine temps we monitored via a ScanGauge II.

I have 247K on the engine and a very well maintained coolant system; Toyota Red, new T-stat, 15K oil in a OEM blue-hub fan clutch, new OEM hoses, OEM brass radiator, etc...

In regards to the fan clutch, it is a worthy mod, that will pay off big. At this time I have only changed out the fan clutch oil. I plan on doing the fan clutch temp mod when time allows.

Proactive PM schedule- that's good Roger... would not have expected anything less.
The life of the fan clutch oil over time eventually shears and no longer performs to spec., upgrading to a higher cst is a good start to troubleshooting, and eliminating, some of poor performance factors in the coolant system. There are several threads over on MUD that address different options to modify the the clutch and upgrade the clutch oil, search: "ToolRus, CJF or landtank".

My current around town temps (ambient temp 70* and A/C) fluctuate from 188*-193* and the rig is due for a bi-annual coolant flush, coolant has approx. 27K miles of usage. I would certainly take a systematic approach to trouble shooting the system and start with the fan clutch mod, upgrading the rad only if necessary....

Running around a bit this AM, I didn't get past 200 degrees. I will have my buddy who works on my truck (ex-Toyota mechanic turned firefighter) do that gear oil swap.

Is it worth it to swap out the thermostat just for PM sake?

In 80-90+ heat I was regularly seeing 196-202 on the scangauge. I swapped the oil to 15K in my black fan clutch, fixed the foam seal at the top of the radiator and now I'm running around at 188-195. I replaced the thermostat a couple of years ago, didn't notice a difference in temps with that change so I assume the old one was working fine.

I usually reserve the T-stat and o-ring replacement for PM with the coolant flush- your call, I would not worry too much about that at the moment and take a methodical approach to replacing one "known" component at a time. Depending on what method use to modify the clutch, i.e. "dump and fill" or "tuned to factory spec" it appears that most, regardless of geographical location have had good success with 15K cst.

2X on foam and intact rad fan shroud...

Although I live in a cooler area and it has not been hot here at all yet I can maybe help a bit. Since getting my truck in Dec of last year I have completely redone the cooling system in my truck all but the water pump. I have replace the rad with a OEM 93-94 3 core copper, OEM T stat and cap, OEM hoses through out including a silicone PHH, power flushed the cooling system 3 times to make sure any sludge was out. Finally I filled my OEM Blue clutch with 10k CTS fluid (no tweek as per ToolsRus on mud). Also replace my head gasket.

Before replacing the rad on slow trails I would easily get to 225f problem was even though I had my rad flushed and boiled over at a shop it was 3/4 plugged and they did not catch it. Since installing the new rad I have yet to get over 193f up the steepest slow trails around. A/C on idling in traffic I can feel the fan clutch engage and watch the coolant temp drop from 193f down to 186f with in about 30sec then the clutch disengages.

Really happy with the performance of the cooling system now. Would have no issues taking it to a hot area at all.

Just did Tucson to Denver: Highest temp was ~208 on long, hot climb in AZ (in 2nd gear at 65mph/4,500rpm). Average temp was 181, swinging up to ~198 for most longer hills and down to ~175 for coasting down. In traffic in Tucson during the Summer I don't usually see anything above 208. Highest I've ever been was 226, when my PHH gave out and was puking coolant everywhere. Luckily, I was 3 blocks from home. Stock black hub fan clutch, no oil swap, stock cooling system all around.
