Starting My M101 Build. I will call it "The Trailer of Two Cities"

Here is the body primed. I sprayed the nooks and crannies with a color that is close to the final coat. It won't match perfectly, but the spray will be 90% covered and mostly in the shadows, but it will protect the metal and give it a cleaner look.

Spraying first definitely saves time, especially if you realize you don't need a second coat of paint!

I remember running into one of those in an outhouse in Texas. Made me think twice about whether or not I needed to go. :Wow1:

If I ran into a black widow in an outhouse, by the time the thought of whether or not I still needed to go actually completed the trip through my brain, it would be a moot point because I would've already went. (if you catch my drift)

Having lived in Texas for 2 years, I never saw one. I guess I'm lucky. Went to school in Wichita Falls in the late 90's for 4 months, and did see a tarantula though. Not even in the same league as the B/W, but a helluva lot more scary to look at.

I'm totally digging the trailer. Keep up the excellent work! I'm inspired to get out and do some more to mine!

Great documentatio. I am about a weekbehind you with mine. I powewashed it yesterday. Going to wire brush and wire wheel the flaking paint off then sandpaper and second power wash then mop down with vinegar tmrw then primer and paint. How many days did you stretch out the cure times between coats?

1 coat primer, no sanding, sprayed nooks 2 hours later, wait 24 hours to paint, wait 24 hours to second coat. If I do a second coat. Like I said I'm not trying to win any awards. Also, the weather here is ideal. 85H, 65L, low humidity.

I was lucky enough to have very little loose paint so I hit the bad spots with a wire wheel in about 30 minutes and then power-washed it.

I wish I had your patience Upcountry. I used to paint houses and landscape. I did other people's things by the book, I mean everything absolutely perfectly, but when it comes to my own stuff, I hate to admit I am lazy and my standards are much lower.

I don't know if you have had luck with vinegar before, but you may be aware of a high-grade acid prep they sell at hardware stores. I forget what it's called, but it contains phosphoric acid which causes a chemical reaction, and all the rust turns black and is no longer rust. I have used it on two trailers and it works great. It's commonly used by the guys who restore old tractors. A liter ($13) can cover a trailer. The only bad thing is it takes a long time to dry, and if you don't let it dry completely it bleeds through the paint and leaves a white residue.

I decided to skip it this time, just to see what happens. I am always trying to save steps (lazy).

My primer says the only prep necessary is washing with water and detergent. I'll see how it holds up.

They used to sell that stuff ar NAPA. It was called "Extend". We used it save few cars when I was a kid. My dad builds classic car hotrods and always had some decaying parts cars sitting around and occaisionally needed a part we would neutralize. The rust with some extend and then paint over it.

First I will say that is NOT primer on the underside. That is the paint color I chose! Don't ask me why, I just like it. If too many people ask me about whether it's primer, I may have to change it.

Not a bad match to the jeep for a $30 bucket of paint! I can't help but want to clear-coat it...

Paint looks good, you rolled it on! or did I miss read it. I'm getting ready to spray my M35 and some 101's with Behr house paint, that they were talking about on SS. Hope mine turn out like your job.

When I rolled on my black trailer, I said "never again" because of the pain of sitting underneath trying to get into all those little tight spots.

The worst part is I have a beautiful sprayer that I never use! I just started thinking about cleanup, sheet plastic, fumes, and rolled it on again.

I will say this. The existing undercoating is sandy and loose. I got most of it off with a power-washer, but a lot remained. If you don't intend on blasting it all off, a roller will help hold the new paint on. I find that pressing it in sort of glues it the the trailer, where a sprayer starts to come off sooner.

I know I know, I'm sure a lot of guys out there are reading and shaking their heads saying "you half-*** lazy SOB!"

I want to make it known that I am not lazy; I'm cheap and lazy!

Scrapdaddy, I can't wait to see how the house paint works. I don't remember the SS conversation, but are you thinking of using Latex paint? Doesn't that stuff clog the sprayer really bad?

So now I want to bounce my idea for the camper off everyone. I was thinking of mounting a ladder rack for a truck on which will form a rigid structure for my walls. Then on top I want to put a truck cap. ladder rack.jpg2810s topper.jpgDSCF5112.jpg

I like the color you chose It looks good with the jeep.
I sold my racks on thursday so all my extra parts are gone.
I towed my 101A2 over 250 miles this past week mostly highway
and it pulled awesome. straight and smooth. Followed the truck perfect and at
65 to 80 miles an hour.

Where did you go? I love the way these things pull. Even without changing the wheels or axle, you hardly even know it's behind you. I can only imagine after lightening it up and putting all brand new rolling parts on it...

Sounds like a good idea for the bed. I've never tried spraying it yet, but the guys that have, say it works great with a HVLP gun. You might have to thin it abit. There was alot of talk about it on SS.Keep up with the pictures of your build.
