Talk me out of this Alaskan

If I were going to do a 12V swap (a definite possibility, although I am pretty happy with how this powerstroke runs or will run with a few issues ironed) I would use a P-pump motor rather than the VE pump motor out of the 1st gen. Loggers around here drop trees on old 2nd gens from time to...

Talk me out of this Alaskan

The build is on Well, its mine now. Went and picked it up this morning. Here is a picture of it on my trailer when I got home, behind the truck it is going on. Loading it was an ordeal (no jacks)! Once I get it unloaded, my first plan is to seperate the lower and upper half. My better...

Talk me out of this Alaskan

Thanks for the comments! After seeing a few 8' (non-alaskan) campers, the difference in interior space that the extra 2 feet makes was apparent. Update, decided to give this thing a go. Called the owner and he accepted my offer. I should be picking it up on Sunday. I am not changing this...

Talk me out of this Alaskan

Well, took a little road trip with my wife today. I will henceforth refer to her as "the enabler". I took her by to see the alaskan in hopes that she would look at it and say "oh that looks like a lot of work, we should buy something that isn't as much of a project". That didn't happen, she...

Talk me out of this Alaskan

I "think" that the cost of the materials for the repairs will be quite a bit cheaper than finding a better one. Much like an airstream, these things seem to command a disproportionate price when they are in good condition. Now, if I count my time towards the investment, there is no question...

Talk me out of this Alaskan

Thanks for the tip, the hitch extension should work fine for me. My boat is actually just a 14' raft, and sometimes I stack a couple on there, but it is never more than maybe 1500 lbs including the trailer. If I am towing heavier than that, I will probably take the camper off anyway. Rafting...

Talk me out of this Alaskan

Follow up question: can you pull a trailer, a boat for example, with the 10' camper in an 8' bed? That would be a deal breaker...

Talk me out of this Alaskan

I looked at a 10' cab over alaskan today that is in terrible shape. The owner inhereted it, and has never used it, so he does not know if anything works. The hydraulics are disconnected, so I couldn't check that. The top will need a significant amount of the wood replaced because of dry rot...

    Project: Doitall Dodge

I found this thread and read half way through thinking to myself "wow, what a cool build" when I discovered that I had already posted here on page 34... Anyway, I read the rest of it and just wanted to drop a note saying great work, this really is one incredible build. And the fact that it has...

    tacoma vs. 4runner inside height

Anyone happen to know off the top of thier head what package the e-locker came with on a pre-2001 4runner? Was it only the limited package, SR5 package, or was it a stand alone add-on?

    tacoma vs. 4runner inside height

Upon further inspection, the 99 4runner I thought I had tracked down that was both 5speed and AWD, is in fact 5 speed, but is not AWD... Crap. The price was right too. For some reason, Tacomas are a couple grand more than a comparable 4runner in these parts. Not sure why. Either way though...

    tacoma vs. 4runner inside height

I am struggling with the decision between a 1st gen tacoma and a 3rd gen 4runner to set up for camping. Both have thier plusses and minuses, but for me the real tough choice is that it is easy to find 5 speed tacomas (really don't want an automatic), but the AWD option on the 4runner is very...

    Project: Doitall Dodge

I know I have a drip drip leak when the truck is cold on the back of the IP. I think its the small two bolt 'timing' cover? Oh right, that leak, I forgot about that one. That was the first time I had my pump out... Sorry man, that is a PITA. Since you are going to have the pump out, order up...

    Project: Doitall Dodge

Yeah, that is why my truck is still around, its paid for, reliable, and it will do whatever you need it to--whether that is Imogene Pass, or pulling a flatbed trailer full of hay. Mine is on 4" superlift springs, with 35s, and an automatic tranny. Do you have specific seats in mind? If I...

    Project: Doitall Dodge

Just got pointed to this thread from pirate, spent some time sorting through the thread, and joined so I can follow. I have a '91 W250 cummins, and a need for a good camping rig, so this this thread was right up my alley. I really like what you have done with this truck! I am looking forward...
