    CTSS Q's

Using CTCSS tones in simplex operation will essentially filter out any signal that does not have the tone accompanying it. Mind you this only works if the the 1st and 2nd party have the encoding/decoding option enabled on their respective radios. Anyone else listening without the decode option...

    Ham License Books

Skephart: Try this website for practice tests. Should be enough to get you headed in the right direction as far as studying goes. http://aa9pw.com/radio/ Not to hijack but I have an ARRL Extra class license book and would like to trade for the General class book.

    Linear amp

Personally I don't use CB much and don't know anybody else who does. If you're heading out wheeling with guys who use it, great, then pursue that route. If you're looking for a much larger following and professional group of people who use radios then amateur radio is the way to go. Not to...

FCC rules on CB radios: You'd be better off going the ham radio route IMHO.

    2M HT Ordered

If they file your paperwork through the mail you can expect to wait about 2 weeks or so for your call sign. If they file it over the internet (the prefered technique) you'll have your call sign in just a couple days.

    What I am going with...

Why not just mount it in your vehicle and call it good? After a few times of taking it in and out you'll decide it's probably easier to just leave it out and you wont ever use it. However, it would be very nice to have two antennas, one for the house, and one mounted on the vehicle so you can...

    Ham or CB?

Very true. I would love to branch out into the HF world but the cost of equipment is the only catching point. Even for a low end used HF tranciever you're looking at least $400, not to mention the typically very large antennas. I believe the 2m/70cm bands are most popular for your average mobile...

    Ham or CB?

I'm with this guy, too. You should be able to find a cheap CB rig on craigslist/ebay/garage sale/walmart/ whatever for $20-$30 and another $10-$20 for an antenna. Just don't get carried away with and put your money into the Ham rig. I also recommend a mobile first. I bought a little VX-1...

    Ham or CB?

HAM is definitely the way to go. My CB gives at the most 5-10 miles of range over flat terrain with a few trees, where as my Yaesu 7800 I can consistanly reach 40-50miles direct and with the use of repeaters I can talk pretty much anywhere in the country as i am in range of a couple Echolink...

    Yaesu programming files (.CVS)

Does anyone have any of their program files they could share with us? I have a pretty good compilation of frequencies for my local area written into my programming software but it would be nice to have some others people files for a wide variety repeaters for different areas.

    NM roadtrip Dec 27-Dec 30

Here's some picture from a roadtrip my wife and I took down to New Mexico over the Christmas/New year holiday. We started out staying at a friends house in Trinidad, CO and then drove down to Taos, NM for a couple days. While in Taos we went to Taos Ski Valley for a little snowboarding. The...

Yaesu 7800/Uniden CB mounting in 2000 Tacoma

I have seen other threads where others have asked where the best place is to mount their radios. Here is what I have and it works well for me. I have the Yaesu mounted on the supplied bracket and have it screwed in to the rear of the center console so I can still hear the speaker pretty well...

    Garmin Foretrex 101 Review

I've had this Garmin Foretrex 101 for a few months now so I wanted to do a little write-up on it for anyone else looking for a GPS unit. For comparison I've also owned a Garmin Legend and Garmin Vista CX. I was looking for a small and simple GPS unit for hiking/hunting and other misc. land...

    Roof mounted lights

for anyone else looking to do this, I've used those 'military' connectors quite a bit while I was in the Army. Just be advised they are large and very unflexible. If you're looking for a neat, tight wiring job these would probably not be what you're looking for.
