Dog Transportation - How do you transport your dogs?

They sit on top of my cargo unit. I have a cable bolted to the 3rd row seat belt bolts across the rear of the unit, and the dogs are "seat-belted" in with their harnesses secured to this cable. Allows them to move around some but keeps them in place even when I place the vehicle at an angle...

    Autohome Overland replacement covers

I haven't looked for a replacement, but I did have some repair work down on my cover by the Rain Shed in Corvallis after some rather low hanging branches tore up a corner. It's not the prettiest, but it's been water tight for several years. I'm sure there must be an outdoor repair store closer by.

    Synthetic Which Rope

I think the internal brake concern is the typically voiced issue. However, the EP series does have an brake external to the rotor which avoids that concern. I've run an EP12.5 and a smaller EP9 and while I don't see heavy use, I've never had any concerns running synthetic on them. I believe...

Getting Stuck & How You Got Out? Need Some Help!

Been high centered in late season snow (thawed and refrozen, mostly just crunchy ice at this point, not fluffy snow). Hi-lifted each wheel up and buried firewood underneath it. No rocks around to speak of, but the firewood pushed right into the ice and held firm while providing traction to get...

Winch Spool Cover a good idea? Anyone use this one before or have opinions on it?

Necessary? No probably not. I went ahead and got one. Keeps the mud splatter off of the winch line, keeps them from quite so much UV. They say UV won't break down a lot of the newer synthetics, but it will cause it to fade. Cheers, JFS III

Which hose for hot water system?

I have an on board shower system that has worked well, however, hose has been my weakest point. The system was originally plumbed with PEX, but this did not survive bouncing around off-road near the exhaust. Not flexible enough when exposed to heat. Developed long cracks and served only to...

    Radio question

(2m, 70cm, 10m, 11m) These are all frequency bands specified by their average wavelengths (frequency = 1/wavelength). Different radios/antennas are needed to communicate within each of those frequencies, although multi-band radios do exist. 2m and 70cm are the most common amateur (ham) radio...

    11" Mac Air

As much as I love using my Mac, programming my Mac, and developing a car interface for most every aspect, for GPS, I turn to emulating Windows. iGuidance for routing maps and Overland Navigator for my topo needs. The available Mac software just doesn't come close. Even on my first generation...

    Rooftop tent help needed

We bought some flat sheets, measured and sewed to fit. Works great except we should have started with king sheets. We used a queen and it slips a little in the middle with the narrow foam mattress, not enough material underneath, Cheers, JFS III

In field navigation software I use:

I have a Mac mini w/touchscreen in my Land Cruiser. I've got a USGlobalSat BU-353 gps puck attached to it. The Mac uses gpsd to connect to the gps, and then redirects the feed to a few programs on the Mac side of things, as well as sharing it to my windows emulation to gps-gate which splits the...

Recommendation on a switch or solenoid to disconnect power from the winch?

This is what I found and used that was rated for over my winch draw. It uses a fair amount of current when switched on. I don't remember how much, but more than I had hoped. But rated at 500A...

    fusing a winch

Yes, I carry at least two. Plus my fuse holder would allow me to quickly bypass the fuse if I needed winch power and was blowing all my fuses. Cheers, JFS III

    fusing a winch

When I installed my 2nd battery, I fused the wire between the two at both ends, and fused the winch wire at the same time. All are fused with a 350A ANL. This covers my winch's max-current, at least as new. Most of the time the winch is not used at full capacity, so this is plenty of cover...

Why do LED flashlights need a solid state chip board to operate?

This is often what differentiates good LED lights from cheap ones. You can cause an appropriate current draw with just a resistor in series with the LED. But this doesn't really regulate it and as a result your light will get dimmer over time as the battery drains. It is also harder on the...

    Istalling Synthetic Winch Line

The screw itself will not hold the line on the drum. Just allow you to tension the first 10 wraps or so tight and firm next to each other. After those first 10 are pulled taut you then roll up the rest of the line under tension (e.g. dragging your vehicle towards a tree). Those 10 then grab...

    Wtb: Roller Fairlead

I've got a roller fairlead from my Superwinch EP9. Installed once for an hour while doing fit checks of my winch. Never used during winching or even had a line run through it. Without wasting time at work doing price checks, I'm thinking I'd ask $70 + shipping. (from 97330) If that's out of...

    Mac GPS satellite navigation software

The current Mac gps software is lacking in quality. RouteBuddy is out there and has decent maps, but no useful touchscreen interface. (I use a Mac mini with a touchscreen in my Land Cruiser). I haven't tried their software again in a while, but looking at version numbers and release notes...

    Hide power pole connector?

Be aware that if the dust caps that xtatik mentioned see much sunlight in their mounting location, they will fade very quickly. My bright red was an obnoxious pink within a month or so of mounting. :( Also, take a look at the color to voltage standard here...
