I would take the length of the tent you intend to install and add 2 to 3 inches on either end that has a riser on the rack (just one end if you remove the riser at the end of the rack). This will allow room to unzip/zip and tuck the material in when packing. I have big hands and would prefer 3...

Now knowing that you plan to mount the tent only as needed, I would agree that the full rack would be most useful.

In my opinion the only use for the rack (if you don't use it sans tent) is to raise you center of gravity even more. I would go for the bars (asuming they are lighter) and only use a rack without the tent. Pleasant travels to you.:) Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk 2
