I just bought a tubing bender with the intent of building a roof rack for my 100 LC (among other projects). I can be kind of stubborn and thought why buy a rack when I can buy the tools and build my own. Plus there have been one too many times I have wished or needed to ability to properly bend a tube. I have looked around at several tubing style racks available from all the big venders for inspiration. To those of you who have one what are the tubing sizes used? Im considering 1" tubing as the main frame with 1/2" cross bars. Trying to get some good info before I start building anything. Unless I have really missed something most advertise the rack length, width, and weight but no tube diameter info.
For those of you who have built your own rack what size material did you use?
Regardless of homebuilt or purchased what do you love or hate about your rack?
If you had to do it over again what would you build or purchase different and why?
Any thoughts on expanded metal vs lots of cross bars?
Low profile vs a basket style?
How much does yours weigh?
