i have a trade offer on my samurai, for a 12V cummins. i really want the cummins for my suburban, so im quite interested. here are the emails i have so far.

1-Interested in trading for a cummins diesel with a CAT turbo? thanks

2-it is just the engine. it came out of a 92-93 dodge. It was used at the local college in their diesel class. they cleaned up the head and lapped the valves. installed a new head gasket and valve cover gaskets then ran it on their test stand. the engine is clean and comes with a CAT turbo and a flexplate. I also have a caddy 500 with a ton of high performance parts if that might interest you. . thanks, David

3-It has a rotory fuel pump, intake, exhaust and a flex plate. the alt bracket is there but no alt. it has a heat exchanger on the side. no fan or power steering pump. the engine is clean. I have a starter and it can go with it but it is for a 24 valve and has the wrong nose cone. it is brand new and you could swap on the right nose cone. it unbolts from the rest of the starter. let me know if there is anything else. thanks

im ok with the value of the trade, so long as the engine is operational. i am not a "diesel" guy, so finding parts is gonna be difficult. also, the learning curve forthcoming will be fun.

So what do you think? list any questions to ask, and ill pass them on!

thanx

Great motors. The 89-93 Dodge trucks with the Cummins used the Bosch VE rotary pump (this pump was used for much longer in industrial applications) and it is my favorite personally. The CAT turbo needs to be looked into... What are the specifics there? Heat exchanger on the side--Likely the automatic trans cooler? It might be hard/expensive tracking down a ps pump and fan etc.. This motor would have came with an intercooler I'd make sure it and all of its plumbing are included.

Personally I think that if you are wanting to do a swap I would hold out for a running/driving 89-93 Dodge 4x4 with the Cummins. A motor here, parts there plus all the nickles and dimes really add up fast.

I have to agree. Having just bought a '97 Ram with the Cummins, I don't think I would want to try to swap that into another vehicle without having the donor vehicle next to it. There are a lot of little things that can add up to a lot of time and money, if you have to source the items. There are a lot of stuff that hooks up to the engine that will likely need to come from a donor.

Also, keep in mind that the engine weighs 1200 lbs. Your typical engine stand is not going to hold this. Think about where you are going to store it, move it, etc. while you get everything together for an engine swap.

I probably would trade for it. My biggest reservation would be the tech school kids rebuilding it. I went through one of those programs, if it was a good program the work should be good, if it wasn't a good program, well the engine probably isn't good either.

The injection pump can be swapped around by changing the gear case but if it came from a 92-93 dodge the ve pump should work great. These engines are pretty simple really, there isn't that much hooked up to them. I bet you could find a ps pump and a fan without too much trouble off a parted out truck. I would just use the crossover tube if it doesn't have an intercooler. Intercooled is better, but more complicated. It is a common thing for people to upgrade from the getrag so I bet you could find one of those easily enough too. It might not be cheap, but the parts are out there.

It is just an engine, with bits spinning around, things moving, and things that don't move. It isn't that complicated. Biggest question is how much you have into the samurai, and how much you are willing to spend to get the parts you need to make it work. Basically what is it all worth to you to have this engine in your sub? Don't forget that you can get a bunch of gas for the price of most diesel swaps.

I would wait and find a whole truck with one. Then you have more parts to start with. And an engine not touched by college students.

Okay. 1st.... A 12v Cummins is a great start.

2nd 89-93(from the Ram), we VE Pump... GREAT pump, just tough to make BIG power with it. They were non-aftercooled until 90.5(91 model year for sure had aftercoolers). This is a mixed bag. If I were going to do a swap, I would PROBABLY leave the IC OUT of the picture.... just another possible disaster if you puncture it... BUT, that is me. On the other hand, its a good thing to have... keeps EGTs down.

3rd... 94-98 Ram had the Bosch P7100 inline pump.. Still mechanical, still reliable, great for making big power. Simple, easy, 1 wire.... well, you dont NEED any wires... but, with the 3 wires for the shut off solenoid, and the wire(s) for the alternator, and starter.

You can snag a trans from any of the trucks. Yeah, a Getrag will work... BUT, I would hold out for the NV4500 w/ 241HD t-case.....

All in all, I would hold out, for at least a rotted away truck w/ powertrain. It will make retrofit of parts a bit easier.....

Not that I know anything of a 12v swap...:sombrero:

I hear what you all are saying. and trust me, id rather start with a complete donor. but large sums of money are non existent in my life. so i have decided to jump on this and begin the parts collection journey!

i appreciate all your info and comments. ill be back with more questions later! think ill spend the next few months at 4btswaps reading!

Okay, BUT, BE SURE the pump/governor are from a AUTOMOTIVE APPLICATION. Or, you will spend good money converting it...

This^^

If it isn't setup to be an automotive engine you may spend thousands getting all the rest of the pieces to make it work.... Heck you might spend a $1000 anyway getting all the missing peices to swap it into your Sub.

I would have waited for a wrecked 94-98 12V :D

BUT GOOD LUCK!! 12v's rock!

First it says in the first post it's out of a truck...

Next what model of burb do you have? You will do lots of damage if it's a 1509, the front suspension will have to be a Dana 60 so depending on year you will need to do a sas. Also the smaller frame of the 1500 will twist and rack with the torque. These engines weigh 1100lbs dry. It's not an easy swap requiring a good amount of lift to clear the oil pan and custom cross members and lots of fun if you have a good shop. Don't meen to be a downer but there is tons to concider with a swap this big

the 4" lift you are swapping in soon will clear the oilpan of the cummins, and the chevy 60 is a bolt on swap. since your suburban is a solid axle it will be easier. for trans and tcase ook at the 89-93 cummins stuff, either getrag or a 727 based trans. i would suggest boxing the framerails in your halfton. it will help make the frame last longer. diesel radiator would be nice. since the ad said heat exchanger i don't think it will be intercooled which makes for an easier swap.

since it is missing alt and powersteering i wouldn't pay more than $7-800 for the engine. if you think that is what your sammi is valued at then go for it.

burb is an 87 half ton. already planned to swap in a 60, and when the cummins time came, custom leafs. boxing the frame is also part of the plan. im planning on using a zf trans. preferably a 6 speed with associated t-case. im all about the swap!

4BTSWAPS will be your best friend. If you are patient, you can score some decent deals on parts. If you get in a hurry, it will cost you. I am putting a 4bt in a Willys Wagon and have been through many scenarios of the build up to its current state. There are adapters available for most any tranny you want. I suggest getting the trans and adapter at the same time. I also have a Burb and a 12 valve in storage that I have been tempted to swap in.
