I would have it done if you are leaving soon. It's 3 hours work pull it fix it and install.
Thanks for the info. I definitely don't have time to do it myself.. especially since the typical 3 hour fix for me is likely a whole day +. At least now I have an idea of what to tell the guys and what to expect as far as their charging. Thanks.

The shift pads are definitely the most likely cause but don't overlook the easy stuff like the rear trans mount. My Burb did the exact same thing where it would pop out of 4x4 but mine turned out to be a bad trans mount that caused the lever to yank when the trans moved around. Wishful thinking yours is a trans mount too, as it is a cheap and easy repair.

I agree with the guys above- and would recommend when you pull it, replace the trans mount anyway. As old as those are, depending on use the metal separates from the rubber and you get this as a result, among other things as well. Since it's out and apart for the fork guides, it's a great time to replace the mount- and the mount is cheap so there's no reason not to do it. I just got all new body mounts for my '97, have a trans mount and went with engine mount also- but ended up changing direction there and will be building different design. All of the factory rubber was shot throughout- combination of age, material and use so lots of give and lots of play in all areas. Other big factor is hidden rust and debris underneath so cleaning all that out and repairing/painting will certainly help long term. Surprisingly pricing is pretty tight- I found body mounts cheapest direct from Energy Suspension, the engine/trans were less on Amazon and Summit was also very close. I found shipping to be the difference and who was offering free shipping at the time. Check around a bit-it's a good time to freshen it all up as you don't want to mix new and old rubber/poly and they're all easy to swap.

Best of Luck,

Mike

Thanks Mike and Larry. I am going to work with my local transmission shop this week to get them to do the fork pads, replace trans and xfer case mount and do a complete transmission service (since it is there anyway). Hoping I can get them on the phone monday morning and get it back in time for leaving for Winter Safari on Friday.

And I quite sure the mounts are at least contributing to the problem, as I look at all the other rubber on the truck (body mounts, sway bushings, etc..) they are all in a sad state.

Luckily my wife went to school with the owner of the local transmission shop. She contacted him for me last night. He said to drop the Suburban off on MOnday morning and he will get it taken care of in time for my trip.

Got the burb back from the trans shop today. They did a complete transmission service, replaced the transmission and transfer case mount and replaced pads on the shift fork in the transfer case. The on road drive seems to have improved a bit, in the sense that the transmission seems to **** better and engages better from the start. I don't know if that makes sense.. but it is what it seems is happening. When I got home to the property this evening I tested the 4hi and lo. We are solid. I am very excited about the weekend and getting this big girl out on trails with the Winter Safari... I think the trails are mostly mild but I am seriously curious to see how she does.

A trans service will make things feel different. If the filter was dirty and obstructed the fluid flow through it into the transmission, a fluid and filter change will firm things up.
Have fun this weekend, be mindful of your size and take some pictures for us.
With the rear locker the Suburban should go anywhere it will fit.

Hey, JSC, on your heater controls, did you look at the vacuum pot directly below the dash, front and center? My '91 Burb has a vacuum line connection about 10" from the right of the gas pedal (think I knocked it off last time with the shop-vac hose).
Good Luck Brother.

Going to check it today. Thanks for the tip.

Well the old girl had a great first outing in Mortimer, NC. I am totally impressed. The trails we did were tight and twisty, with a few difficult spots. Honestly more obstacles than I had ever planned for this rig, but she walked it all. I am glad I put the rear locker in... I idled over sections that others struggled with. I ma more than satisfied with the off road performance. sadly I do not have any decent pics of the off road part of the weekend with the Blue Ridge Expeditions Winter Safari, but I have a few others. Also, slept last night in the second seat. Super comfy and warmer than the tent... helps being 5'6" of course.IMG_6267.jpgIMG_6262.jpgIMG_6270.jpg
