The A340F is an auto tranny found on several toyota vehicles. I have a 2000 tundra V8. At around 76K miles back in mid-2004, the tranny shifted hard after a wheelin' trip. The shifts occurred on the hwy and on my street on my way home. I pulled the pan and found this:

Ended up finding a used tranny with 15K miles and had it shipped to me. Removed the bad tranny and installed the used one. Figured I tear open the bad one to see what happened and this what I found. Noticed on the ring gear, the cage of the needle bearings. I believe that failed causing the bearings to lodge themselves between the ring gear and the od planetary gears and then the implosions started...

Thanks for this post. I believe my Tacoma uses this same transmission and I've got 120k on it. Hopefully, mine lasts a bit longer.

Did you rebuild that transmission?
