I second checking your cats first. I've had two with what seemed like lifter noises that turned out to be a busted up cat.

Did you actually read what they have? Those are used motors and they are out of stock anyway.
I can sell motors for $30 and look great as long as they are out of stock. People can say, "He's got great prices!", and they're right. I just don't have anything to sell at those prices.
Check in two months, they will still be out of stock.

Yes, I read what the web site said. They were in stock when I posted it, which is why I posted the link. Also, I was referring to your comment that roverlandparts.com was selling used parts at new parts prices. I was providing an example that they in fact were not. New blocks (block only) sell for ~$4500. RLP is selling essentially a crate engine (used) for $2800-3200. That was the point.

They never have 4.6 engines in stock. I've looked too.
I've also seen them trying to sell 4.0 cranks as 4.6 on ebay. I don't trust them one little bit. There are much more reputable vendors to recommend.

I had the same thing in my old '00 Disco2 with 120k miles....

thought for sure it was a lifter but no...
thought for sure it was the flex plate but no...
thought it was a loose catalytic converter but no..

LR Dealership could not locate the loud tick

Replace your oil pan gasket since it's probably leaking.... I had a really bad tick that varied in volume based on the oil weight used. when I removed my oil pan gasket I found that my #7/8 rod bearings had excessive movement if you slid them side to side. I measured all of the rod journals on the crank and found them to be ok. So... I rolled in a new set of STD rod bearings (and new bolts) and the tick went away and is still ok 1 year later.

just my $.02 from experience

Thanks for the tip. As I'm working through the possible culprits, this is one that I have not heard. Hardest part for me is the tick comes and goes. Does not seem to repeat itself in any pattern. I'll get there, just will take some time. I sure do like it though. My 4 yr old is in love. Could be the high vantage point from the backseat, or his own moon roof.

You may also have two other issues that need to be looked at - as I had a "tick" in my Range Rover classic that I thought was lifters- Turned out to be an exhaust leak combined with a bad cat.

Just may want to check.

I also had a "tick" that turned out to be an exhaust leak on my 03 Discovery. The nuts that secure the exhaust pipes to the manifold tend to work loose.

The ticking is more then likely caused by slight up and down movement of the cylinder liners. Mine also does this, one day it was quiet and the next it sounds a bit like a diesel, to me this rules out gradual wear items like bearings. This thread has some good answers in it. www.landroversonly.com/forums/f40/dii-engine-knock-52572/

Thanks for posting this. I've searched a lot, and have never found this one. My tick sounded exactly like what they describe in the slipped liners. I've put money away for a Turner block, but may save more for the stripped engine option. I'm surprised how much people spend, just replacing internal engine parts in hopes of curing the problem. That is expensive and time consuming.

By the way, after the ATF flush, and induction cleaning, my tick is almost non-existent. I can barely hear it, and I can not hear it in the truck at any rpms. I can only hear when I crawl underneath the truck. Other people have said they can't hear anyting, but I know it is there (just barely). Drive her 'til she blows. Who knows it could last a long time.

Thanks,
Troy

If the ATF flush helped maybe it is related to a lifter issue, or maybe it's two different issues going on.
