2 door JK storage ideas

Omar is right on for storage in a JK. Cargo netting and bags are your best friend. Draws/Cabinets are cool, but add weight and actually take away valuable space. I plan on color coding mine. Camo for survival, Blue for water/filtration, Red for emergency, Black for sleeping gear, etc.. I've not started my build yet on my new JKR but plan on going just netting and bag route. I also plan that every component be as modular as possible and serve multiple purposes.

The best way is to learn to travel light.

I have an Action Packer full of my essential camping gear (shovel, TP, flashlights, knife, lighter, etc...), so all I have to do is throw in the Packer, tent, sleeping bag, chair, and food/drinks. with the back seat removed there's always plenty of room.

Nice. I've toyed with building a trailer but not too seriously. Maybe a high clearance hitch rack but I don't have enough gear to necessitate a trailer.

I'd say a roof rack is the way to go or you could use a trailer. I use both.

The cargo area in my Jeep is for the dogs also, so very little if anything gets packed there and the rear seat is removed.
Here's my setup, it all fits in the trailer.

After what nearly happened to me this morning I can tell you a roof rack is out of the question for this Jeeper. Was doing some mild offroad in tall grass/hay. When the left front went into 3' gully. Never saw it in the tall grass. The rear right felt like it was going to come right over my back. I most certainly would have rolled my JKR if I had any weight up top. After today I now know I'm going with a trailer system for my kayaks and rtt.

Could you measure how high your rack is above the windshield? Im worried about fitting in the garage
Measured it this morning and it was 7 1/2 inches above the windshield. Putting the vehicle in the garage could be an issue, I keep mine outside. My trailer stays in the garage.

Well same issue, same jeep and a different jeep.. In the past.. and while in a rush, I grabbed my bike rack and threw it on the spare tire.. that attached a large/wide plastic bucket or storage tray with u bolts on the exposed bike support arms.. Only trouble with this as we travels.. the weight was unbalanced the bike rack would slide off to one side or another.. Then moving to the High rock stage, where it's a heavy duty storage tray that we mounted in the open area of the rear roll cage.. Image as reference..

All the camping gear was in the cargo area.. water, gas cooler would go in the exposed area of the tray.. other only trouble with this.. is that inferior coatings allowed the metal brackets and polls to rust area.. I was updating Highrocks design to use lacrosse poles and a substitute.. but the 99 was sold and never got a chance to complete the concept.. So we'll be looking at doing the same for the Bird.. One just need to put things on the front or the rear and not on the sides or top in order to manage tight squeezes..
