Ok, so i have my callsign on the cruiser. When they were issued i was never told to surrender the old plates. Im assuming if i sell the cruiser i need to put the old plates on and then carry the new callsign plates onto whatever vehicle i get and let the DMV know?

is this correct?

I plan on calling the CA DMV tomorrow for a clear answer, but i figured some of you may know.

Not sure how things work in CA but in CO you need to remove your plates when you sell your vehicle. The buyer needs to take care of registration/temp tags when he buys the vehicle. I always let them drive off with title in hand and no tags. If they get stopped its on them. Again, not sure how CA works but your old plates should not be currently registered to your truck since you put on the vanity plates. I would not put them on when you sell it. If you sell the truck with your tags on it there is no guarantee the buyer will remove them and your associated info. And yes you should be able to transfer your vanity plates to your new vehicle. Good luck with the sale.

As far as I know, you never let your plates go. At least in Colorado and I believe California to. You bought them and there yours for keeps.

In ohio you dont turn plates in, THey may no longer be valid but you dont need to return them. I have had vanity plates since they were availalbe and every 5 years or I a new physical plate because the plate design has changed. I get to keep the old ones.

You should have returned your old plates. DO NOT put them back on.
You will keep your Call sign plates and the new owner will need to go to the DMV right away and get new ones or temp sticker.

When you get your new truck you will need to go through the same process as you did to get them before. you just don't have to wait for them.

I have not done this with vanity plates but I have with Handi-cap plates. Should be the same process. I think

You could be nice to your buyer, by going to the DMV before you sell it and have the plates changed back to the old. However they might make you surrender your vanity plates
