2001 GMC 2500 4X4, 6.0 V8, EC, LB and stock. What are its limits?

I'm leasing a 2008 MX-5 Miata right now for my economical and fun ride. I looked hard at the S2000 but it was like lying in a bathtub. It's really more of a race car than the Miata but the Miata is more all around fun to drive.

We're also kicking around the idea of a used 100 Land Cruiser but other than pure lust I'm not sure it gives me enough more over the GMC. I really need to figure out how to have the truck do double duty where I'm not messing with it too much.

Try this thread. If its something that looks feasible, look for a used one. IF you like it, then its all about an efficient loading/unloading station for the truck accessories.

And a used FWC can retain its value well.

I've got a Lance camper already and looked extensively at the pop-top stuff for its lower COG. The problem is mounting all the hardware to secure the camper and then taking it all off to mount the toolbox, etc. It's all too much hassle. I want more simplicity for this rig and just go when the mood hits. I started out sleeping in the back of my old truck (as well as backpacking) and then I got married and life has gotten ever more complicated...

I am glad that you got out and tried it out, and succeeded. I bought my suburban and had the same feelings, it's too big, too wide, too tall...etc, I have had that thing in so many places, it performs awesome, Back in May, I pulled a 16ft trailer down an ATV trail in the White Mtns to get back to a campsite my friend knew about, the twisting turns and all the trees provided for a very slow technical trail ride but we got up there and on the way back, we just were in awe, how the heck did we get through this... it was great.

Someone told me on my guitar forum that the truck probably could outperform my driving skills. That's probably right! :D

I am in the same boat, an '03 Chevy 2500HD. I think for my purpose, just exploring, it will be fine, but the only thing i worry about here are washes and their banks, some of them can be troublesome with the breakover and rear angle.

There were a couple traills I went on with my dad's stock YJ where I thought my truck would be fine except for 2-3 spots, and those had bypasses. I know i'm never going to try and climb up a waterfall, but with the monsoons, some trails can get pretty beat up. With a mild lift and some sort of traction improvement, I don't think the desert presents much of an issue to the fullsizes.
