2001 Range Rover HSE 4.6 ????

Question of the day. I'm sure i'll piss someone off with these questions. but i'm not a range rover aficionado yet.

I found a guy selling a 2001 HSE 4.6. it has 98K miles on it. its in good shape mechanically. i found a few leaks around the radiator. but other then that the motor and underneath are fairly clean. shifts smooth, and has good power. he just replaced the battery and the alternator.

it has a factory grill guard. 18" wheels with new rubber.

the climate control screen is screwed up.

it looks like the air suspension has been removed? it looks like it sits about 2" taller then stock. there are coil springs on all four corners.

dude is asking $5700 because he needs to get rid of it. it has some hail damage on the hood, and a few small scrapes. doesn't bother me because its going to go off road.

should i run away and never look back. i've very mechanically inclined. i work on all my junk.

i think this is the dreaded P38 model, right?

What's with the coolant leak. Watch that closely and see how long its been like that. Over heating is no good

the overflow hose is cracked a little. a small leak. i can stand that. otherwise everything works. what didn't work was replaced with coil springs all around.

Did you get it? Pics?

I had a few small coolant leak issues on my 2001, one was tightening a hose clamp, the other was throttle body gasket, a very common leak. Cost to repair $25. Then my cruise control went out, cracked vacuum line. Cost to repair $6. Other than regular maintenance and fluid changes, no other issues this past year.

When you want to fix the little things that inevitably go wrong, check out www.rangerovers.net/forum for the P38 forum. There is a slew of deranged P38 owners, like myself, who love their trucks. There is also a wealth of knowledge and most everything can be fixed or has been fixed by someone on the forum. Too bad the EAS was converted to coils. I love my EAS ride and it is easy to work on.

For the LEDs on the climate control (HEVAC) screen, a few of mine have started going out and this is common. It is the LED strip not making good contact. These issues plagued every RR, BMW, Audi, VW practically all european cars manufactured in the late 90s' early 2000's. There is a write-up on rangerovers.net.

You will find many naysayers that despise the P38 as seen in that earlier post. Most of them have never owned one though. It is a solid truck mechanically, but its the electronics that get most people down. Be prepared to do the work yourself or you will need a second mortgage to keep up with repair costs.

First off, change all fluids - oil, filter, tranny, filter, diffs, transfer case (ATF - not gear oil), pollen filters, etc.

Welcome to the P38 family :smiley_drive:

here is the one i'm considering.

i'll know more this week if i'm getting it.

98K miles. new tires. coil spring conversion. 4.6 HSE

needs a hood at sometime. merely cosmetic, it has hail damage. the rest of the vehicle is in great shape. everything works right on it.
