2014-16 EcoDiesel - Post settlement and ECU update?

My buddies 16' ED with 44k miles left him and his family on the side of the road after Christmas in the middle of Utah. It took the time truck 4 hours to get there. Ram paid for a new motor, rental, and tow. Since the ecu updates he is lucky to see 23 highway and 18 in town. He lost 5 mpgs. His truck is stock with p-rated tires. The interior is really nice though.

Having to do it over again, would you opt for the 5.7 or 3.6 instead? The ED seems to work for a lot of people who do long drives and carry small to moderate loads.
Having a do-over I wouldn't buy it. I'd go back to an older duramax. The ED fit for everything I needed it to do, but it's too expensive to be this questionable on relability. But it is pretty.

Yeah mine started making noise about 1.5 hrs. from home one day so I just headed back. Long story short the main bearing let go and sent metal through the motor. Got a new motor then the update, and this thing is a dog, the lag on throttle response has almost gotten me hit multiple times because it just won't move. I can floor it and count to 5-7 mississippi, before it suddenly goes full throttle. I've never gotten over 17.9 mpgs
