That's pretty cool!

This isn't coming from a perspective of envy for those who can afford it or anything at all like that but in the context of travel, trail runs, the word everyone hates (Overlanding), car camping, etc - how practical are these things really?

I mean if you were in a place where cost is really not a factor and you just wanted a great vehicle to drive the long Americas how valuable would a Raptor be compared to an everyman's XLT or a Tremor?

Constructive discussion implied here (y)
Agreed. If you take money put of the equation, this truck still wouldn't work for me due to the limited towing and payload numbers. I just think they are a pretty neat truck!

What a time we live in where factories are offering Rubicon Wranglers, Mojave Gladiators, Bison ZR2's, TRD-Pro Tacomas, Tremor Ranger, F150's & Super Duties , Ram TRX's, Broncos, etc, etc....

Not sure what the heck I’d do with a 720hp truck. Not that I have the means to afford a $100k+ truck. Definitely impractical. I couldn’t stomach to put a scratch on it.
Now, a base Raptor, I priced one out at something like $55k. Maybe that’s doable for a family camping truck. It would be a blast down the thousands of miles of dirt roads out here in the west. But who am I kidding. I’d probably cringe at every scratch on that thing, too.
Give me a base truck with a Tremor package. To me, that seems like the ultimate daily driver, family camper, weekend project vehicle, road tripper, etc.

It's a double edged sword though.. we see people who are newly discovering motorized outdoors access and it goes like

or

.. like, dude... dude... pause a second. I grew up doing this lifestyle my parents had a beetle and a '74 C10 (2wd) and we went everywhere. When I set out as a young adult I went everywhere-and-a-half in a Ford Escort - name a destination out West that isn't itself a Magazine Feature Trail (like where the toughness of the trail itself IS the feature, i.e. Dusy Ershim, etc) and I probably drove there in an '81 Escort or an '87 Montero with open diffs and street tires. Not because I'm a tough guy :ROFLMAO: - but because crossing the Mojave or driving to Alaska or 99% of the other destinations within the North American continent truly don't need 37's.

Again this is not meant to poo-poo the Raptor that thing is awesome! (y)(y) What I hope is that people don't use these showpieces, adrenaline trucks, desert toys or whatever category you call them and mistake that as the "You Must Be This Tall To Ride" sign at the gateway to exploration. I guess we should appreciate everything these trucks are great for and be willing to fairly acknowledge where their limitations, size, thirst, part availability, long term prospects for reliability, etc become a burden.

Edit: Something I noticed from that First Look article..

"The rear leaf springs and solid axle are history, replaced with a new five-link suspension with 610-mm (24-inch) coil springs. " - I think the author mistyped part of that as the solid axle is very much not history just the leafy bits.

"adrenaline trucks"...love it.

It's all about the visuals these days, less about the substance....sim to you, I grew up in a time where most folks had 2wd trucks, some guys had a 4x4 "WOW", lift kits were not a common thing, let alone big tires.

The trucks that catch my attention these days are not the wild ones, but the relatively stock ones, 32" AT's and some tastefull mods like a hidden winch, low profile camper and no more than 1 jerry can....the minute I see fake beadlocks I'm out.

Same. And chances are if a $100,000 truck was in my budget, it would be because I already own a Lake front cabin... Thus negating the need for me to have a truck like the Raptor.

I'm sure a Civic would get me there.

Now.... I may want / need a truck to haul or tow things to said lake front Cabin...

I mean, it's a cool truck and all and I'd buy one for the sex appeal...

Ford not offering a V8 is getting so much hate on the internet right now. "But the TRX has a V8" blah blah blah The reason the raptor has been around for 10+ years now is because it's practical for many people who want an offroad truck. It's cool Dodge offers the huge motor but how many people will opt for it and be able to pay for it? The one's who do are the same ************ who buy the 140k Raptor with an after market Shelby package and live on their estate. There's one in my area I've seen a few times and the kid is like 20.

Raptors are awesome and I imagine I'll own one at some point in my life.

Locally every Raptor I've seen was 88K CAD or higher. The theoretical base level Raptor is going to be special order unless you live in a Major urban center (and the average Canadian capital city doesn't count as that)

The Tremor is a more handy idea, but i don't need or want a crew cab do no Tremors for me either.

But yeah, what a time to be alive with OEM high HP big tire trucks popping up everywhere.

Miami, FL to Anchorage, AK in 1981 in a "new" FWD Pontiac Phoenix.... did I mention it was January.... with a new bride sitting beside me. Agree with everything you've written.... it's amazing what technology is available now. Unfortunate so many get caught up in the numbers/names efforts versus the experiences. I am still trying to digest Cybertruck and 1000h.p. Why?

The main reason I would never buy it is it is too wide. It wouldn't fit down the trails. The reduced towing and payload would be an issue as well. If those things weren't a problem, I might consider the one with 37's but I hate bodies with plastic on them so there's that.

But, even if those issues were addressed I would have a hard time spending the money. It just isn't worth that much. I would rather have the money and invest it. My kids are going to love me even more when I die.

On the subject of the “good ol days”; however, my thoughts differ from some here, as I’ve suffered through too many miles stuck in the back of a station wagon or an extended cab truck, no AC, nothing to do but stare out the window for hours on end—I certainly appreciate the modern amenities, especially for the kids. Comfortable cabin, better 4wd system, better suspension, all the while being safer and more fuel efficient, I don’t mind manufactures making improvements on that end. Fortunately, most base model trucks these days have all these features standard. Good times to be living in.

Had an 82 Toyota compact car in my teen years that would not maintain speeds of 35mph at the slightest hint of an incline. Glad to have moved on from that thing.

But the advantage of growing up with very Spartan vehicles and equipment is I don’t feel inadequate to go camping without a roof nest, rotopax, 270 deg awning, and 200 patches on the ceiling of my rig. (Not that there is anything wrong with that).

I'm not sure about the styling and the nixing of the SCAB is kind of a bummer. 37s as an option is nice, and that suspension is super trick. Like I've said the V6 was always going to be the main engine in that truck. We will see what they deliver in the future, but why not have some fun speculation? I don't think its the 5.2.

edit: shameless self plug.

I think it's awesome and I hope they sell every one before they are even built.

People seem to forget that not everyone buys a vehicle because it's practical... Some people buy an expensive vehicle for no reason other than it's fun to drive. ;-)

Yup, I’m pretty sure they will sell every one of them right off the bat. And hold their value like all Raptors do.

Also, I wasn’t saying 700+ wouldn’t be fun, just to clear. But I know myself and know having that much power on tap, my license would be revoked by month end. ?
