285/75R18 AT tires: A good choice for expedition-travel, domestic full-size trucks?

Given the purpose this truck will be used for, I would go for:

  • Toyo Open Country MT 315/75R16 tires

I've gone through a couple sets of 285/75R18 now and will continue to buy them for my 100 series. The size is starting to get popular. I'm hoping more will get on board so that I have more choices. I've compiled a list to help you =) :

Toyo MT, AT-II, RT
Nitto Ridge Grappler, Terra Grappler G2, Trail Grappler MT
Goodyear Wrangler MT/R-K, Duratrac
Cooper Discoverer A/T3
Maxxis Bighorn MT-762
Yokohama Geolander AT GO15

There are also a few choices in the 295/70R18 that are very close to 35x11.5 tires. On my SUV, the taller & narrower 285/75R18 fits better than the shorter & wider 315/75R16.

By design, I geared the old truck tall (3:55's) and run stock diameter tires.

The result is incredible fuel MPG and low RPM, quiet highway running.

If I still had 4:10s, I would consider taller tires, but with 3:55s, not a chance.

The old chipped 7.3 powerstroke is a great motor, but it simply doesnt have the power to turn big rubber with tall gears.

While the more common route is to go to larger diameter tires, what you did is a brilliant way to get better fuel economy, low RPM's and also keep the wear and tear to a minimum.
If it were possible to gear my truck taller than the 3:55's it came with, I would consider running 265/75r16's or even 235/85r16's for an outcome similar to that which you have achieved with your old truck.
