Quick lesson: just b/c you have 29's does not mean you can ride on the side of a hill covered in half-rotten wet leaves that have mud beneath them. You will lose traction and slide downhill. Class dismissed. :bike_rider:

if i didn't already have all my money dumped into my singlespeed GT Xizang, i'd be riding a 29er right not. my buddies have singlespeed and fixie 29er's and boy do they float!

What alot of people do who want a 29er and a commuter is they will run more of a road tire instead of the traditional mtb tire on the road. There is quite a selection since the iso (622 mm) is the same as a road bike. A nice 700 x 35 or 38 rolls really well and will hold their shape on most 29er rims.

Ah good call, didnt even think about that. All the more reason to use it as a commuter

I must be missing something here. I dont see how this has to do with a discussion on a 29'er.

I'm with you on the 29ers. Have been a bike junky for a long time and have owned many bikes (too many according to my wife!). Picked up a Karate Monkey to build with old parts as a beater/commuter several years ago. After spending some time on it I slowly started to shift over to 29ers for good. Sold off all the 26" stuff and never looked back.

Currently have an Epic 29er, the KM, and a Stumpjumper hardtail. The Epic is a great bike for endurance stuff, but that SJ FSR 29er should be a great all-rounder! The new brain shock works like a champ!

I just checked out a 29er yesterday, now I'm hooked. Would love to find the Stumpjumper but the local shop is telling me October. I'm betting I could find one sooner if I really wanted. Otherwise I'm looking at the Rocky Mountain Altitude 29 and the Pivot Mach 429. The Pivot is the cat's meow, but it's pretty spendy!

It seems Gary Fisher is also having supply issues. Word is, for some reason, the demand has spiked quite a bit this year. The manuf. did not expect this, which is why some bike shops won't have any more bikes until fall of this year, which will be 2011 models.

Had an '08 Gary Fisher Cobia for about a year and a half, then 4 days before being deployed, someone rearended me when i had it mounted on the back of my Jeep... Frame, sprockets, crank, rims, all bent. was a sad evening. Still waiting for insurance to hopefully cover the deductible!

but here's a pic of her mounted on the miata, makes the miata look even smaller than it really is!

Well I ended up getting the Gary Fisher Rumblefish I. They had it in an XXL frame (23") here locally and with a 10% discount to boot. Love it so far. It really makes me a more confident rider having those big ol' wheels under me.

16 Years on ExPo. Whoa!!
I've been obsessing over a 29er hardtail myself recently. I really miss and never ever should have sold this Gary Fisher hardtail I built up that weighed a little over 23lbs, using the DMC conversion kit (best 29er single speed kit out there that is also pretty reasonable)... I priced out Spots through a pro deal connection and am also looking strongly at a Ventana El Commanante aluminum frame to keep it in the family... My pocket book may be hurting shortly!

This was my first 29er and I would build it a little differently today (no RaceFace cranks and I weigh too much for Egg Beaters and use Time pedals exclusively now and try not to use a chain tensioner any more, but it was a good bike)...

Damn Clydesdale :)

What's wrong with Egg Beaters and RF Cranks? I'm 200-205 lbs and my setup has been holding up fine. I used to run Time ATAC pedals, but the noise coming from the plastic covers annoyed the hell out of me. This was back when they first came out, so it might be a moot point now.
