We crossed back north at Nogales this January and waited 4hrs to cross... Lots of fun. I will stick to Lukeville in future! I will look at 5spd models as well. I figure I will be spending some money at some point on whatever I buy.
All the Nicer Dodges I find are getting snapped up quick. I might have to look at F350s again. (Agggghhhhhh)

The truth simply is, finding a GOOD diesel, in pretty good condition, is going to VERY tough given your price range.

Just be patient. Me, I gave up, and built what I wanted. Only problem I have now, I have to see if I can bolt a quad cab bed, and make a 6.5ft flat bed. But, if I find that's to difficult, gonna have to sell this, and start over...

I sold my 01 2500 quad cab with all available options in what I would call excellent shape for 9K last year. It was a truck I trusted and I wouldn't hesitate driving anywhere. With 195K on it during the last year I owned it It went from the coast in Maine to Astoria Oregon in the same month and did not skip a beat.... Great truck!

I don't think your budget is too out of line (for used trucks in Utah anyway), but again you will get a higher mileage truck but that is not a bad thing at all if you spend time making sure the truck has been taken care of.

I don't like the Dodge.... okay... I don't like auto's period. The NV4500 is about as good as they come. If the clutch does wear out upgrade and be done with it. Just my .02

Ok... So most of the Dodges are a litttttle beat in my price range. I found a 96 F350 PSD with ZF5 that is in SPOTLESS shape. I can get it for $3-400 over my budget. As much as the PSD has cost associated with it, I think so does a less than well maintained Cummins. I think I will take the plunge and if the motor goes south I will do a Cummins swap. See the pics below... Crewcab I sold today(460 auto), and baby brother (PSD 5spd) is the prospective replacement. Thoughts?

my neighbor bought a family friends 97 reg cab 7.3 with an auto. 240k on ALL original drive train and its still running great.

it was kept up with all scheduled maint and kept stock.

I beat a 96 ford f-350 with a 460 in it for 3 years as a plow truck. it needed a tranny around 120k but thats it.

The nice thing about the F350 is it has a complete service history from two owners. 2nd owner works for first and has since the truck was new. I also bought the identical truck new in 96 and have missed it for years! I think I will go for it if it drives well. You could eat of the engine etc it is so clean. And, it has passed ways and means hearing (Wife said ok!).:sombrero: I saw a few cleaner 2nd gen Dodges and they all were snapped up in hours. I also am now a pedestrian, which as a contractor, sucks! Those table saws don't fit in my back-pack when I ride the mtn bike...

Soooo, The story continues. The F350 was garbage, as was all the other trucks I looked at. 2500 miles and 4 days shot to h-e-double hockey sticks! I did however drive my first older Dodge diesels in a long time. A 2000 with stick and a hopped up 94 auto. I will for sure be sticking with the Cummins now. It is what I have wanted from the start and even though the steering was a big issue with both trucks I drove, the engines were sweeeet! I like the power from the sixes much better than the V8s. So, as a few people mentioned, to find the right one, up goes the budget... Where the cash comes from, nobody knows...

I know we have a few people on the board up that way who would be happy to check it out for you...

So, it is killing me a tiny bit, but I have decided to look at gas powered Dodges for a temporary solution to my truck-free state. I have been driving my neighbors 71 GMC orchard/farm truck. It left me stranded 3x the first day I drove it... Now it runs regularly, but having to wear a respirator while driving to keep from dying from the exhaust coming in the cab gets me some strange looks! Ear plugs for the exhaust noise is fun too. I am looking at 94-98 era gassers. I have found a few that are ok. I will post some pics when the search is over...:costumed-smiley-007

Don't forget about the 1st gen dodge diesels. Personally I think they are a slightly better overall truck than the 2nd gen. The VE motor can't make 1000hp, but the gear drive np205 transfer case and kingpin D60 front axle are great. I got my old dodge for $2200 if I remember right. Its not pretty, but it runs like a top with 260K+ miles on it. The first gen trucks can be found for under 5K pretty often.
