No, I never eat my friends:) The trip was a huge success. Everyone on the trip was top shelf. Couldn't have been better. Kudos to Chris for all the planning and logistics. The wheel'n was great, the scenery better.

Mark and Beth took camp cooking to a new level for me, moose steaks cooked on an open fire, garlic butter S-car-go, bear noodle stew:chowtime: The ultimate were the mountain pies made with homemade pie crust and home made apple pie filling, OMG!

We did 4x4 touring on the Mon Forest, hiking on the North Fork of the Black Water river and swimming in the Big Run waterfalls. I can't wait to see the pics. My thanks to all , I had a blast:)

Well since we survived as well, I must say it's nice to be friends with Al. Well, certainly nicer than not being friends with Al.:chowtime: We also had a blast, and really hated to return to the grind. We'll provide some of our pics as soon as we can. I'm already waiting for the next trip!

Moderators please move this into completed.

Had a fantastic, and very memorable time! Thank you to everyone who joined us, and it was a pleasure meeting many of you for the first time! ... and thank you all for the squeeze cheese in bulk. ;)

Please share your pics, and memorable moments if you've got 'em!

  • The contemplation of the omnipresence of "environment", from which there is no escape. Deep stuff.
  • Falling on my ass while walking down to the waterfalls for the first time. Thankful I put my camera in its bag only moments before. Its a miracle the camera survived the weekend.
  • General appreciation of our campsite as it is clean, spacious, and offers swimming, incredible waterfalls, and breathtaking views only a short walk away. Its going to be hard to beat!
  • Shane, Jared, and Kenny's collective vigor, off-road fervor, and (someone's) unabashed flatulence.
  • Al's proficiency with campfire pyrotechnics. A red devil emerges from a swirling vortex and sneers menacingly! We cower behind our camp chairs at the sight of the towering plume.
  • The infamous nuisance bear at the Dolly Sods overlook. Besides being devoured in frenzy of slashing and biting, how else can a bear be a nuisance? Its a rather vague description for a bear. Our imaginations ran wild.
  • The timeless dilemma of whether to follow your GPS or your intuition. Well, the Garmin says its a road but there may be visual cues that suggest otherwise. Fortunately, we were not imprisoned in someone's basement and forced to live out the rest of our lives as sexual deviants.
  • Climbing up the fire tower in the morning fog. As Beth eloquently described, "So this is what it looks like inside a cotton ball." Very surreal. I personally really dig misty, foggy settings.
  • Our perilous and time consuming hike down into the Blackwater River gorge, only to find a dead end at the rapids, and then the extremely taxing hike back up. As it turns out, it was a river access for kayakers - who are obviously in much better shape than I!
  • The food and drink were first class! We enjoyed four different wines, and feasted heartily on moose, brie, bear, potatoes, escargot, mountain pies.
  • The "tribute". Thanks guys! :chowtime:

I'm sure there's more stuff. I'll post it if I think about it! I will be posting some pictures, and a link to the slideshow really soon.

Superlative Chris!

As a longtime peeper on this thread, I am thrilled to see the families all getting out together in some beautiful country. It sounds like Shontz puts together quite an adventure.

Thanks for sharing the slideshow link. The waterfalls were excellent. Were these all taken with your new digital camera? Great stuff!

But who Michael Jackson'd Big Al?

BigAl MJ'd himself! He had quite the talent. His new moniker around camp is "The Fire Whisperer"

Yup, thanks kc! Out of a little over 400 shots, those 286 were the ones that made the cut. I'm not sure about the exposure on some of 'em, and I'd really like to upgrade my glass - see if I can improve that keep/delete ratio.

Was it actually as perilous as it looks? I couldn't tell because I was looking through the viewfinder.
