The more I see crazy JKUs like this, the more I think a nice ground tent and good mattress are the way to go.

I did the ground tent thing for 2 years on the Pan-Am. The first 6 mos to a year were awesome. 18months it started getting old, and the only thing that saved me in the last 6 months was being in Patagonia, where the camping is epic.

If I were going for less than a year, absolutely I'd go for a ground tent.
I'm planning on many, many years for my next one, and for me, I want something better than a ground tent.

To each their own, of course.

I don't get the point. Just buy a truck with a slide-in and tow your 2-door JK behind you on an aluminum trailer. Honestly, I think the 4-door Wranglers are too much. Four people fit just fine in my 2-door.

Four adults fit fine. Two adults and two kids in car seats, plus camping gear for everyone does not. I love my four door!

Only people who actually have kids understand just how massive a car seat is. Putting one in the back seat of the average vehicle consumes as much passenger room as my 6'3" 340lb brother-in-law.

Agreed! our convertible car seat, in rear facing condition is massive! It fits pretty well and luckily I'm a short guy so no issues with the seat hitting it.

My boy loves his Recaro. The back seat of my JK does not.

If I were setting up a Jeep today rather then my swb TJ and trailer, I'd certainly use a JKU with some type of a camper top. The suspension can always be worked on to support more weight and to work on packing lighter options. Plus with a Jeep, drive it as far as you safely can where few other vehicles can get to, and pop the top and enjoy. But I'll never get rid of my TJ so that's not in my cards.

That's a very fair point.

As a weekend warrior, the idea of ground tent camping for a year+ did not cross my mind... and I'll be the first to say, no way I'd do that unless I had to, heh.

Did the Action Camper ever go into production?

Not that I know of... Thaler Design brought the prototype stateside either last year or 2012 and that's the last I really heard about the ActionCamper. I'm pretty sure they were a sponsor or had a rep on here. Adventure Trailer sold the ActionCamper on their website but I don't know if they ever sold any or even had any in their possession.
