I think that the MB om617a 3L 5cyl turbo is a much more real world sane swap in a Jeep. But that's just me...

I have a diesel grand cherokee.

It now sounds like one of the 80s mercedes cars with a diesel. Jeep has almost 50k on it.

When new it was quieter but I knew it would get a bit louder as it broke in.

I think its factory mileage paper said 24mpg, mine is an 07.

I can routinely get that kind of mileage out of it but I live in east tn and don't see high speeds much. Lots of 2 lane 55mph stuff out here.

If something less aerodynamic can equal or beat my mileage then I applaud it.

But I somehow just expect 20mpg out of some of that stuff in the links.

My jeep is stock. I replaced the tires before this past winter, put the exact same thing back on it because I ran into them at a nice price and I was more interested in good winter handling on the roads than anything else because I need to show up at my job.

One thing about the 250hp and 400ft/lbs of torque is that my jeep only has 215hp and 374 ft/lbs of torque so those numbers are not bad at all.

My grand cherokee has the same tow rating the hemi v8 grand cherokees got so I am pretty comfy with stuff in that power range.

As far as the 4bt being even louder, I would expect it and be fine with it.

I have never been a big fan of super quiet stuff. I prefer to know something is working and gassers get exhaust systems while diesels should be heard a bit and turbos should certainly be heard.

That engine has another 100k before it's broke in. Lol

more details

Interesting discussions about vibration, I think until you drive one you won't know for sure. My 2006 6BT can wear you down after a day of driving and has a lot more mass to absorb the noise and vibrations.

On another note the cost of this conversion is on par with the other companies providing this service, that includes diesels in toyota's or hemis in jeeps. I do have a quote but since it is taylored to my specs I am not going to go into the details. I would have to drive one before one before deciding on the diesel route. Since I prefer do do my own wrenching I would also want to see the DIY conversion kit as well

Jeff, the owner, did say they will be displaing at SEMA in November

Cheers

What- am I trying to acheive with spending all this hard earned cash
Why- am I unhappy with my current set up.
When- will it pay for itself (seems to be used alot in these topics as the reason behind the swap-or excuse for justification)
How- will this mod effect the rest of my experience.

threw that together off the top of my head but seriously there is no one best mod for all especially considering a complete engine swap comparing small gasers to big gasers to big(4bt in this case) diesels to small diesels.

Owning a 06 CTD I happily accept having to turn my engine off at drive throughs, go out of my way to fuel up in the city, go inside the station to fill my tank in one shot, search out RV or bus (not really but sure feels like it) parking and creep through parking garages just incase their mismarked just to be able to be loaded down and pull the pass at 70 in OD. An expensive smile but it is what it is-for me.

The 4BT conversions I've read about use a 4 inch lift and big tires to make room for the front axle under the front of oil pan. I've often wondered if a dry sump oil system, where the oil resevoir is separate from the engine, would be an alternative.

Or, good heavens, run IFS! But we all know IFS is too weak for off-road use. :snorkel:
