The 5.9 Cummins is definitely the "simpler" engine compared with the 6.7 - no worries about all the pollution control crap the newer 6.7 is saddled with - and that same crap is usually what causes problems needing expensive repair.

If you find a low-miles 2003 or newer 5.9 engine noise is not much of a factor. What you also need to consider is the transmission behind the engine. If you are going manual tranny, then no problem. If you need an automatic transmission then you need to know that the 5.9 engine came with a 47 or 48RE 4 speed automatic that can also be problematic. The 6.7 engine will generally have the 6 speed or 8 speed automatic behind it and those seem to be holding up quite well.

I just happend to luck out when one of my neighbors decided to get rid of his 5.9 - because it has the manual transmission and his wife just could not learn how to drive it. 2004 model with only 50,000 miles on it - I just turned 67,000 miles and I'll own this truck until I'm too old to drive! I get 13-14 mpg with the below setup and it will pull any hill without my needing to shift out of overdrive. Love it!

But...if I were buying new I'd definitely be looking at the new Ford with the 7.3 gas engine instead of any of the new diesels. Those new diesels have too many problems, and for where I take my rigs dependability is paramount!

Not to bring up the diesel vs gas debate, but

5.9L
2003-200; 305 HP and 555 TQ
2004.5-2007; 325 HP and 610 TQ

6.7L
2007.5+ ; 350 HP and 650 TQ (many variables, ei cab/chassis, etc)

Ram 2500 with the gas 6.4L: 410 HP and 429 TQ

Just depends if you NEED diesel and NEED the low end grunt it offers...........along with the added price of the initial purchase, the replacement parts/ oil changes, maintenance, etc............

Excellent points...

Added info on the RPM specs.............

5.9L
2003-2004:
305 HP @ 2900 RPM
555 TQ @ 1400 RPM

5.9L:
2004.5-2007:
325 HP @ 2900 RPM
610 TQ @ 1600 RPM

6.7L - 2007.5+
350 HP @ 2800/3000 RPM (varies with drivetrain)
650 TQ @ 1500/1700 RPM (varies with drivetrain)

Ram 2500 with the gas 6.4L:
410 HP @ 5600 RPM
429 TQ @ 4000 RPM

If you need low end GRUNT, the max TQ of the diesel is hard to beat as you see

I ran my 305/555 with the stock 48RE for a while with power mods, lift (2" level and 4.5" lift), and taller tires (35s)

The stock trans never gave me an issue...........just an annual flush and fill of the fluid

Once I went to a 6" lift with 37s..........and hit around 600 HP I went with a full aftermarket built trans

I think a big block gas motor is what I would also choose............diesel is risky business even if you have deep pockets

The Ford 7.3L gasser sounds interesting:
445 cid
430 HP @ 5500 RPM
475 TQ @ 4000 RPM

Ram 6.4L:
392 cid
410 HP @ 5600 RPM
429 TQ @ 4000 RPM
