50 Days of Land Rover ownership before first breakage!

Is that like a record or something?

Was teaching the wife to drive it tonight, rolled back a little on a hill and she let the clutch out kind of quick and *POP* No more forward motion. Quick analysis revealed something broken in the rear end, so we locked the hubs in and limped home.

I know the rear ends in these things are fragile, but REALLY? I mean we were rolling back a little but it wasn't THAT much of an impulse. The ironic thing about it is I emailed a local bloke about a 109 rear today before deciding against it due to the mods necessary to make it fit, starting to reconsider though....

50 days, that should put the people who claim Land Rovers aren’t reliable in their place. I hope the repairs go well.

Hopefully it's not the transmission.

I just reread the original post. Oh, it's still drivable with the front hubs locked.

Nevermind on the transmission. That's if you hear a pop and you have no more forward or reverse motion.

You broke a rear axle.

No.

It sounds like simply a half shaft. check both, easy to replace. If it has gone at the splines check the otherside for twisting/damage at the splines (both ends).

Rears are easy, fronts involve a bit more work. I take it you have an 88"?

Second the rear axle shaft, probably the short side. Not hard to replace. Just make sure you fish out all of the pieces.

If it was the rear hunt arround of a 109 rear sailsbury axle and do an upgrade, they're wife proof.

The problems I had was my female business partner kept blowing transmissions.

Ummmm, way to make a snap judgment. You know nothing of the condition or age of the vehicle, how it's been used, etc...

an axle IS a half shaft... sheesh.

Mike I thought it was funny and true lol

yesterday my wife and I were on the interstate in our 04 D2 and passed a Giverny Green RR late model in superb condition being towed. We burst out laughing.

My wife said "you know some where there is a not to happy wife giving an ear full to a not so happy husband who is pulling out his Visa card and giving an ear full to a very tolerant service manager"

I have to say that BMW, Mercedes, Land Rover dealer service managers take more punishment than a clown you throw pies at. They really earn those "awards" on the dealer walls

my dealer reported to me that one cold winter day he had no less than 25 Discovery models towed to his lot in like 4 hours - it looked like a rally he said hahah

I often wrestle with whether or not it might be a financial advantage to set my Disco on fire

I just can't think of what I'd do with a flame thrower after the deed was done :ylsmoke:

jk! jk!

Shrug. I really can't say if mine was any more or less reliable than any other car I've owned.

Scratch that. My 1989 VW Fox was the most reliable car I ever owned by far. But other than that... My Disco has been definitely more reliable than our 2003 Focus wagon, a car that actually got a "Best Buy" award from Consumers reports.

Go figure.

I have a 1962 Triumph TR-3B, so I know and love British -- don't get me wrong here!

But the 1980 Toyota Pickup my Dad bought new and drove off the lot, and which I finally sold on to a guy in the neighborhood who kept after me to sell it to him, never made a trip back to the dealer in 29 years! That's over 10,000 days with nothing but routine maintenance.

The thing is, just like the 2001 Tacoma I have, they're a bit like refrigerators. They work without another thought. And you love them just about the same as a fridge too, alas.

Yeah, English stuff is a pile of issues. But I still love it.

You're right Michael, I don't know the condition, age or how the vehicle has been used, etc. The OP took kind of a light hearted comical approach to his Rover breaking. I was merely following his lead with a little more levity. Why so sensitive? Judging by the tone and text from CLynn85's original post, he doesn't seem so defensive about Rover reliability perceptions. He highlighted fragility of the axle and pointed out the irony of very recently attempting to make a deal for a 109 axle. I am afraid I don't understand why my post was so offensive.
