50 Days of Land Rover ownership before first breakage!

I know the rear ends in these things are fragile, but REALLY? I mean we were rolling back a little but it wasn't THAT much of an impulse.

Totally off the subject of how to repair a Land Rover axle; but this just brings back some high school memories of asthmatic and anemic late 70's V8 powered "musclecars" rolling in reverse and then being dumped into a forward gear to produce a big smoky....no it wasn't me, honest....my inline six and powerglide wasn't about to try that.....(want to see comical? watch a friend explain to his Dad how the trans and rearend got screwed up in a 79 Camaro.....)

just changed F&R diffs in a 55k D-II to get 4.10s w/ TTs. All good stuff until I checked the outgoing rear stock diff- with two whole teeth still in place on the ring gear!! Added HD F&R axles to boot- a little expensive and excessive, but keeps her from breaking at an inoppurtune time -like on a trail 50 miles from nowhere and 500 miles from a dealer. Radiator was seeping just a bit too, so new rad and hoses. Error on the side of caution, and she will return the favor I have found. Oh, and no warning signs on the rear diff- quiet as a church mouse...

Wow, wasn't expecting the whole semantics discussion!

Thanks for the inputs. I haven't had a chance to pull the hubs and see what's going on inside yet, but I'm fairly certain I popped a shaft. I have a complete spare axle (complete drum to drum) that I've been meaning to rebuild and swap in, so this seems like an appropriate time to do so. Will probably get a set of new axles and seals from atlantic british and throw them in just to be safe and keep the originals for trail spares. Guess this is a good time to pull it off the road and fix the starter problem as well.

Let's not get worked up. It's all stick thingys and metal stuff anyway. Pop them out with a screw-stick and a whack-em doohicky and refill the diff with whatever it is that washes up on a Louisiana beach. That should 'bout do it.

As for the strength of the stock axle shafts, they are actually pretty stout for their spline count and diameter. Repeated stress cycles does do them in after a while, though. If you are concerned about this, you can periodically replace them, upgrade to 24 spline diffs and Mercedesrover's shafts, look at the Toyota diff conversion, or go Salisbury. All depends on what you want to do- there is no "right" answer.

You're right Michael, I don't know the condition, age or how the vehicle has been used, etc. The OP took kind of a light hearted comical approach to his Rover breaking. I was merely following his lead with a little more levity. Why so sensitive? Judging by the tone and text from CLynn85's original post, he doesn't seem so defensive about Rover reliability perceptions. He highlighted fragility of the axle and pointed out the irony of very recently attempting to make a deal for a 109 axle. I am afraid I don't understand why my post was so offensive.

Beats Me, I thought the only thing missing in your post were some smiley faces...I got the fact that you were making a light hearted joke:coffee:

Good point, I should have animated up the post with smiley faces. Apparently the humor isn't clear to everyone. I guess I'm just caught off guard by being called out for making a "snap judgment". It makes me ponder who is really making the judgments in this thread. Oh well?

Shouldn't be a hard fix, but annoying all the same so soon after buying. It's not what you did that caused the failure, though, but the cumulative wear and tear on the shafts - they mush have had fractures from years of abuse to pop like that.

Make sure that the bearings for you new axle are Timken and the seals are Angus. If anything comes in a Britpart package, don't accept it.

There is a long and sordid history of Rover-bashing on this board. My error was making a snap-judgment that *you* were making a snap-judgment.

I think in tennis you have a double-fault...maybe I just committed one.

Sorry. I'll unwind now.

Maybe I'm just mad that two of my three Rovers are down right now.
