I wanted to share some of the photos and a quick report of a trip that I wrapped up the past month.
What started out as a desire to take a short trip to the west coast, turned into the purchase of my dream vehicle and 6 months of travel to seek the best mountain biking, rock climbing - and to photograph it along the way.
I started a blog part way through my journey and aptly named it Sojourn Focus. It can be visited here.
While it is currently incomplete, I do plan on "Back Blogging" it so that the story may be told in full.
My vehicle of choice for this trip was a heavily modified VW Syncro. Engine conversion, bigger brakes, upgraded tranny, springs, shocks, electrical, heating, tires, wheels, bumbers... you name it. The vehicle is still a work in progress at this time of writing and likely always will be, so long as I own it.
My trip started in British Columbia where I purchased the Syncro virtually sight unseen. I was living in Ontario at the time and had my sister give it a once over as well as a garage before flying out to open my wallet. It turned out that it needed a fair bit of work, which included sorting of the electrical system, replacing of some minor parts and sorting of the house water and propane systems. The good news was that the mechanical systems were in good shape. This included a number of amazing upgrades, including engine (Bostig Ford), Transmission, drive line, wheels and brakes. All the major stuff really. After a few weeks of proving, were ready to rock!
Some of the major stops included Red Rocks NV (Rock Climbing), Joshua Tree CA (Rock Climbing), Sedona AZ (Mountain Biking), South Rim Grand Canyon (Tourist), Bishop CA (Rock Climbing), Moab UT (Rock Climbing & MTB), and Fruita CO (MTB), Boulder CO (MTB).
I encountered a few mechanical issues, but nothing that was unexpected. Around the tail end of the trip the original springs were starting to sag, causing alignment issues and premature tire wear. A stop into a local Boulder Colorado VW shop and the ordering of new Go Westy Heavy Duty Spring were the solution. In total, there were only 2 shop days out of close to 5 months continuous travel - not bad!
